Default 01770 - Temperature Sensor for Level Control Pump/Compressor (G290)

Got into the car the other morning and the green suspension light was on. The car is down to the bump stops. The pump was not running. I pulled the code and it showed 3 codes. I assume that the pump was running at some point and overheated throwing 01770 - Temperature Sensor for Level Control Pump/Compressor (G290) + 2 others listed below. Took it to a local Indy shop and they tested the fuse and the regulator. Both tested good and they were able to power up the pump so it is not blow yet. Last time I had an issue with the system it was just the fuse and the regulator. They cannot run it down any further so I am taking it to an Audi shop 58 miles away. The pump now turns on when you turn the ignition on but will not lift the car.

So I have a few questions. How long will the pump run before it throws this code again shutting it down? 01770 - Temperature Sensor for Level Control Pump/Compressor (G290) If I let it run long enough to shut down am I running the risk of further damaging the pump? Is the better alternative to pull the fuse so that the pump does not turn on again before I can get it to the shop which will be Wed? I am assuming I have a leak somewhere in the system and or the control valve Part Number: 4F0-616-013 is bad. I am trying to save the pump/compressor from killing itself. Finally will it make the 58 mile trip mostly highways riding that low or should I get it towed? As always thanks in advance for your input.

If you have vag-com, you can plug it in and monitor three measuring blocks and drive it around and see what it is doing. I think it's something like channel 4, 5 and 6. The first one will show you the compressor relay state (is it supplying power to the compressor or not), the next channel displays the temperature of the compressor.....basically if the compressor runs continuous for 4 or 5 minutes it's going to get close to 100 degrees C.....don't know when it shuts down on over temperature. That's not an issue unless it keeps running a few minutes later and never gets a chance to cool down.

The next channel you can see what valves are opening up (front or rear) so you can see what it is trying to do, i.e. putting air in a front or rear strut. It's pretty easy to troubleshoot from there.

To answer your question: I have no idea if it would make it 58 miles, you would have to see how often it is cycling.....but it sounds like it has a leak, so it is cycling often.

There is a lot of good info on that page.....once you can figure out how this works (it's super simple), and watch it in VAG-COM....you'll figure it out. Google self study guide 292 and read that for 20 minutes. Here it is:

Thanks I have read over that study guide. I unfortunately do not do a lot of my own work but I like to be educated while talk with the people doing the work. Can you drive the car in jack mode? Since it disables the leveling would that prevent the pump from coming on or does driving the car automatically cancel out the jack mode?

You can drive it in jack mode as long you don't go over 45mph i think maybe 40 not sure.

Jack mode goes off automatically at about 5 MPH.

I drove my 04 A8 back from a West suburb of Chicago (300 miles) with a blown strut air bag so the compressor shut off after a couple minutes and the flint end was slammed.
This was on pothole-infested I-94 In Michigan in the winter. Drove at normal 70-80 mph with the headlight range warning light and beeping every few minutes. Had to get it home.
Only damage was one nasty pothole caused the lower engine cover to hit and cracked it in a spot below the air box. A couple of ty-wraps fixed it.

Thanks guys. I hooked up the Vag Com and drove around the neighborhood a bit. Compressor did not cycle too much. The car is really low and any change in pavement level causes the back end of the engine cover/belly pan to scrape. I am concerned that anything on the road or a pothole is going to rip that belly pan engine cover off at highway speeds.

I might look into the cost of towing it to the repair shop vs driving it. I will call around on Monday.
