I've had both and the A8 is much better
I traded in a 2001 Mercedes S500 sport (not 4 matic) for a 2004 A8L.
The Mercedes was better in the following areas:
Dealer attitude
Paint job
Power trunklid speed
Cruise Control (I had distronic on the Benz, I don't have active cruise on my A8)
Sunroof size
Stereo sound quality (I don't have the B&O upgrade)
TeleAid versus OnStar (TeleAid may not work either on a 2003 unless it has been upgraded. OnStar is dead in Audi)
The A8 has been equal or better -- sometimes much better -- in all other respects. I don't miss the Mercedes at all. The most recent Car and Driver as a near tie to the newest generation of Mercedes S-class. I think that speaks to its quality.
I might also note that my Benz had a substantial amount of electrical gremlins which required a lot of time in the service department. My Audi has been nearly trouble-free.
