2005 A8L 4.2 - Refresh
I came from S4's and Allroads. Wanting a chance sold all the allroads and I picked up the A8L a little over a week ago. I got some good help on the ABS issue I had. Figured I would put everything into 1 thread for the restoration of it. 137K on it. Timing was done in 14' at 114K.
So far I have done the following:

Re: Problems still
1: Sirius - ask them to reset it a few more times. It took them a few tries. If that doesn't work, I'm not sure. Is there component protection on these? I'd imagine it wouldn't even show up at all in the MMI with the serial # for activation if it were. Keep trying? (Call them on the phone, don't use the automated one on the web) 3: Does VCDS need to be programmed to tell it that it has a massager? Check on that. I'm not sure, I don't have the ooh-la-la massaging capability, *just* heating and cooling! :D Re: Things to do: 1. Diffs: General maint. schedule: Check my Audi resources 'Maintenance Schedules' section for the maint. info on your D3. 3. Squeak: Probably definitely possibly (heh) the control arms. As they say in Game of Thrones, "It is known" (issue) 6. MMI: I sent you a response re: the binary image ISOs on my archive site for 4610, read that and it will explain why they don't show up as a normal ISO9660/Joliet on your computer but can still be burned as a direct binary image to the disc. 7. AMI: Get yourself an optical splitter ($50 or so) kit, I believe part # 8E0 035 111 D or 4F0 055 307 B, and you can have both AMI and the CD changer hooked up. Also if you wait to do the MMI update until AMI is installed, and the AMI version is not the latest, the update disc will upgrade your AMI. Or you can do it afterwards too (or check AMI version, make sure its latest, ... ending in 0850 I believe but not positive, theres a thread on it here in the recent posts in the A8/D3 forum). User 'bluewavestudio' has instructions and is selling a kit that will give you a full Android control and video playback etc on your existing MMI as CD #7 (might work with AMI alone too, don't know yet) and it even has a skin he made that makes the interface look like the stock Audi MMI. Very sweet. No FBAS mod required AFAIK. ltooz has good instructions on doing FBAS as well if needed. 11. Valve cover gaskets: I'm replacing both my valve cover gaskets here shortly too. Order the part(s) from autohausaz.com, they have the best pricing. Also get yourself a few extra bolts/screws for the valve covers as some will undoubtably strip/break/whatever. There's a few good threads on it here along w/ caveats and tricks. For instance , I'm not sure the side , but reaching the bolt is very tough and it's easier to cut a flap in the heat shielding to access it. Getting a small socket wrench and small bits in order to reach down in there is a must, and/or get pivoting Torx bits (Bondhus makes a good one). 13. Before you tint, pull back the stripping on the inside-facing part of the window and look down into the well and see if you see a piece of metal pushing into the glass. The window winder/regulator has a known problem where the piece of metal at top of a pulley / frame is known to bend in and put pressure on your window. If you tint the windows with this problem it *will* scratch open the tint line a can of sardines. I learned that the hard way. I replaced the window regulator and am now waiting to get my drivers side re-tinted. Make sure you check all four windows as I recall one guy here having all FOUR of these things pushing into the glass! Also, the rear headrests don't come out unless you remove the rear seat making it a major PITA for the tinting guy. Make sure he knows this in advance so he can ask for more $$ up front so that he takes more time and does the job *right*. Same with the little tiny windows on the rear sides- they aren't the easiest to tint because of shape. If doing this yourself, proceed with this in mind. Regards, Naudi |
Alarm Horn issue - battery inside this craps out. Lots of threads on this - easy fix. Here is the part number: 8L0951605A. I took a shot on ebay ($30) and its works fine (for now) versus $270 from ECS.

Sirius XM. Anyone able to get me some screen shots from their Sirius / XM measuring blocks to see what the antenna information is supposed to look like? Thanks All! |
I didn't plug Vag-Com in and pull the info from it, but I did pull info from the XM menu, the "green" hidden menu, and the version/etc info from the upgrade menu. See photos attached. I don't know if any of this will help or not.
I'll get VCDS readings from it tomorrow. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.aud...1d23ae13c9.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.aud...a50d6c8382.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.aud...5c6cd96089.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.aud...95e619a345.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.aud...aea9c262bd.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.aud...df5cfa1623.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.aud...ac20780c67.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.aud...7d5e6b4ec7.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.aud...728b73db8c.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.aud...2a23ed34aa.jpg |

Looks like a module or satellite issue for me.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.aud...4f04594475.jpg Or the antenna is busted? Not sure. But yeah it looks like you have no signal then, and thus any amount of signals sent by XM/Sirius won't get to you. Also.. I just noticed yours says Sirius while mine says XM. Did you install the latest MMI yet with those CD ISO images? Regards Naudi |

Yup, no signal- whether you have a subscription or not you should be receiving the signal. Did you do anything to the antenna? Is the car's computers coded to recognize the satellite radio feature? I'm not entirely sure but maybe, if it isn't coded to have it enabled (either coding via VCDS or enabling it in the green menu), it might not bother with tuning in with the antenna?
