2005 A8L Ignition Coil Problems

To get the detailed background on this story check my blog entry here. http://blog.liquidretro.net/?p=70

The result of the car being towed to an Audi dealer was according to the service sheet the left side ignition coils replaced and then ALL right side coils were replaced. After my dad got the car back we drove it and took the neighbor for a short spin and the check engine light came on again only 5 miles after getting the car back. My guess is that some of the coils that they did not replace on the left side are bad. Does anyone else think this may be the case?

I also did some research online and it said if you are constantly replacing coils that you should replace the spark plugs and the spark plug wires. What does every one here think about that? Has any other A8 owners had similar problems to this?

http://blog.liquidretro.net/?p=70</a

Get Out!!!! An A8L in Lincoln??? =)

j/k

We were in Lincoln this past Christmas and the entire two weeks there I think we only saw 3 or 4 Audis (all A4's, maybe 1 S4) Three years ago I drove my car from San Jose to Lincoln, I've never seen another A8 in Lincoln since! I'll be out again in March, I'll have to keep my eyes open for your dad.

On to your question... if you search the forum and specify the D3 forum you will find about a dozen posts about coil problems. I think a couple people ended up having to replace their spark plugs.

Hope this helps... oh, and...

Go Big Red =)

Ok HAHA yes an A8L in Nebraska. Contrary to what everyone may believe there are a fair number of A4's in Nebraska. However we only have one dealer in the state. Kansas, South Dakota, are the same.

We talked with the only dealer in the state and he will not have time to look at it till Thursday. He thinks that a wire was not connected properly or came loose and this is what is causing the error code.

Yes, it's a shame that there's only one dealer for the whole state...

When I was in Lincoln and needed an oil change I had to go to Omaha to get it done. The VW dealer in Lincoln said they couldn't do it - of course that was in '04, maybe the VW dealer has someone that can do maint. work now.

I hope your service advisor is correct and it's something easy to fix.

BTW, I'm not putting Nebraska down, just trying to (good naturedly) welcome you to the D3 forum! My husband and I were both born and raised in Lincoln, lived there 25 years before migrating westward. We still make it back at least once a year to visit ALL of our family that still lives there. It's just fun to see someone on the forum from my hometown =)

Go Huskers!

A VP of slot operations at one of the Council Bluffs casinos has an A8L. He lives on the Iowa side of the river.

Nebraska is one of my favorite states to visit. I am not kidding. It's all because of the most honest, genuine people who live & work there.

Remember, Nebraska spelled backwards is AK-SAR-BEN.

Well I have an update. The car was taken to the doctor yesterday and I must say service is very good when you drive in with the flagship car. It seems the dealer is the only one who actually know what the car is.
He called today and said that the reason the check engine light came on again was the catalytic converters were blocked with carbon. The reason for this was because the car was driven approximately 500 miles with the bad ignition. The dealer said he also suspected that the previous owner or the dealership we bought it from did not always burn premium fuel in the car and this led to the failing of the ignition coils.
Audi is replacing the cat's which cost $1800 a piece under warranty. He said if the car was not under warranty he would of said it will burn off if you drive it. He also said it is a very long process of replacing them and the mechanic would spend all day or more on this. He also said that the car looks great and is in great shape and should have no more mechanical problem and he hopes not to see it back till it needs its normal service.
