Well, just the water pump is $419. Not really like "the aftermarket crap".

These guys are quite cheaper, but still not close to Blauparts. I might go for the OEM water pump, but not for the rollers and tensioners.

FWIW, I bought the Blauparts kit and installed it in the Summer of 2010. With 60,000 miles on the Saleri (called junk by some, but I never even heard of the brand) water pump so far; no leaks or noise.

Now, the serpentine belt that came with the kit was junk, as I found out a year later in the midst of a 3500 mile road trip. I'm told that they have corrected that little problem. Thank goodness it's the same serpentine belt that must be used on F-150 pickup trucks or something as I was able to get one a a NAPA store in Miami, Oklahoma about 30 miles after it let go.

Check this out if you have a few minutes....

I think that timing belt would last as long as engine if there is not any leak in that area. Water pump and thermostat not that long. Unfortunately ingenious German engineers came with a design where thermostat can't be changed without removing timing belt and it is also powering water pump. Well, 15 years later they came with chain, but just to make it more complicated they put it at the back of the engine.
I love how you summarized it !! Very well put!!

There is some knowledge gold in this thread. By far the best and most tehcnically knowledgeable audi peeps anywhere on the web!

Also enjoyed the read on MBs road trip with his son and the unexpected adventure they had. I consider myself a budding mechanic who is hungry for more knowledge and enjoys learning from others in real life or via this forum. Keep the technical know how coming guys!

Camshaft gears rotate freely when what bolts are loosened? The cam gear mounting bolts - do they even need to be backed off?

I've done 928 timing belts, no need to have a tool for the cams. Just solid marks on the pulleys and then getting it all just right. The cams will move due to the valve spring force. (The 928 cams are adjustable as well, using a valve lift micrometer, but that is not part of the belt change).

That was a nice video - never seen it before. It certainly is easier to work with the whole front of the engine exposed. The Porsche 928 you work in the gap between the rad and engine. Lots of room actually but always looking up or down.
