4.2 died on me. Seems like no fuel (IT'S THE FUEL PUMP)
Again, I am writing about my 2002 A6 4.2 because you guys respond to questions.
About a week ago I began having issues with it restarting after sitting for less than an hour. It acted like it wasn't getting any fuel. It would crank and crank and then finally start to cough and sputter and then fire up.
On Friday I stopped to fill up with gas and couldn't get it to restart. It took about 1/2 hour and then it finally started. (Its a good thing I have one heck of a battery in it)
I started driving home travelling at about 65-70 mph when it suddenly just died. Again seemed like no fuel. In fact it acted like it ran out of fuel.
I had it towed to Audi and they will look at it tomorrow.
On the positive side Audi gave me a 2016 A3 2.0, dual clutch transmission loaded with extras. (The window sticker listed the price at $47,200, base price is $34,600)
That thing hauls butt!! I was amazed at the acceleration!! Its about the same size as the 1999 A4
It seems as fast as my A6 4.2 which has an APR performance chip boosting it to 340 hp & Flowmaster exhaust.
Anyway, not a bad little car.

From a wild guess, I would say seems like fuel pump/fuel filter issues. I'm not sure if the C5 A6 4.2 had two fuel pumps like the D3 or just one. But I'm sure MP4.2 knows since he owned one previously.

Hello TFT.
Do you have a scan. it does sound like crank position sensor, or fuel pump, could you hear the fuel pump for the first few seconds when turning the key on, I am not sure if you know that the fuel pump is located under the passengers rear seat, my son's A6 4.2 did the same thing a while back and he was stuck on the side of the road, I said listen for the click when turning on the key (but don't crank), then do it again and listen for the fuel pump hum, he had the click, but no hum, so I picked up a fuel pump and changed it on site and he drove away, that's about 2 years ago.

Guesses are just that. You need to perform a proper diagnostic scan.
Your symptoms are exactly what I had when the crank position sensor (RPM sensor),went bad on my 04 A8. Failed when hot. Cooling off helped it temporarily work.

OP,
If you can get to do a scan please post it.

Sounds like fuel pump or crank sensor. Neither ever acted up on my C5 4.2 (or the W12) though, so have not had to sweat either. Scan it, though crank sensor may not show codes since it is kind of the top dog sensor control wise.

Thanks for the responses.
I did a search on Crank Sensor failure and the symptoms all seem to point in that direction.
I was having misfire issues about a month ago (cylinder 8) as well as rough idle. At that time the dealership switched plugs, coils and injectors around to see if one of those was faulty and found there were no issues with those components.
I'd like this car to last another 2 years. It has 189,000 miles on it but it is in immaculate condition. I just had new rotors and pads installed, new wheels and tires, new windshield. The interior as well as the exterior is like new.
Here is a pic with the old wheels and then the new ones:

I just got a call from Audi and it's the fuel pump. They want $564 for the pump and another $500 for the installation. I can find the pump on line for $185, granted its not an Audi Fuel pump. The installation sounds high too.
Any thoughts?

$1064.00 for a fuel pump !!!
That's outrageous, it's not even an hour job, I was done in about 40 minutes and that was on the side of the road with limited tools, the fuel pump at Audi sells for between $281.00 and $367.00 LIST PRICE, not $564.00, the lower backseat pops out and there is the black cover with IIRC 4 screws holding it down, you remove said cover and there is the access to the fuel pump, you spin the ring, disconnect hoses and some wires, and install in reverse, BUT if YOU take this on yourself, be sure to disconnect the battery for safety.
