Default A8/S8 D3 Bike Rack?

Hello All,

Cycling Season in the Pacific Northwest (we get started a bit later than most of you) and I need to transport my cycles when I don't head out from home. I tried to do that this week (I just purchased my S8 over the winter) and I couldn't get the bike in the trunk, and my old trunk mount (strap on) from my A4/S4 won't mount any longer. Has anyone out there successfully mounted a bike rack on their car? If so what kind/model? I was thinking a low profile trailer hitch type?

TIA.....

Just use one of those ones that isn't permanent. One of the ones that is somewhat like a strap on one. I work at a bike shop as well, (bicycle) use one from thule, they are pretty nice.

I have a nice strap on rack now, but there's nothing to hook onto underneath. That's the problem I have with the S8. On the bottom there's only the plastic from the bumper cover, I don't think that's strong enough to handle the torque from the straps?

Thoughts?

I'm in the same boat right now, as I'd like a decent solution to move my bikes when I need to with the A8. As much as it doesn't thrill me (as I don't want the rack on all the time), I"m coming to the conclusion that roof bars are the only way to do this.

I'm glad someone raised that question! I have the same issue!

But now I want to have a hitch instead and have a light trailer just for bikes. The problem I have now is the cost of the hitch! The German one with electrical system will cost 1500 + 300 for shipping. I cannot justify that price for such thing. I'm planning to build it myself. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have been using the Thule Raceway Trunk Mount rack for my MTB for the last year or so at least 3 times a week for short distances and have taken a couple of 500 mile trips with the rack with no issue at speed.
It goes on and off in about 15 seconds and I can fold up nicely to keep in the trunk if so desired.

PM me if any of you need a good discount on bike components or wear. I can get a pretty nice discount on them and can trade for Audi parts/ services or just cash. Anything I can do to help. Bike racks are too big to ship or I'd def get ya one

Well, I can now comment that the Sarris Bones RS is the best trunk rack I have ever seen. Interestingly enough, they show a D3 A8 in their product image for the rack. I purchased one today from a friend's shop, and it is an excellent fit on the A8, super quick to get on and off, and VERY sturdy.

For anyone else who needs to move their bikes with an A8, I highly recommend this route.

I use a Saris roof rack.....same one that I used on my D2....I used it last week on the D3...works perfect! You can probably find one on cragslist for cheap. I have the fitment guide in PDF format if you are interested.

I have been using the "barracuda" type available from audi dealerships. It works well for 1 bike, but cumbersome for 2 or more, given the lever and access to it - of course, you can turn the rack backwards on the passenger side to get to the lever more easily, but then it looks a little odd having one bike facing forwards and the second facing backwards...
