adaptive headlights

The self leveling headlights are easy to spot if you start the car at night facing a wall. The headlights start aiming down and you see them 'scroll up' if that makes sense. It only does this on start up, if you turn them on with the car running they don't do that.

Self leveling is different than adaptive. Audis with HID's do the lower than rise move on start up as noted. In general, at least Audi thinks that is required regulatory with HID's--that they are self leveling. I agree with that. But a variety of manufacturers skip that and may just use a manual adjustment kludge--like a prior Toyota minivan we had did.
For true adaptive, I check function by finding a quiet and safe street at night. Cut steering one way, then fairly abruptly back the other. If you do it a few times, you should see the headlight throw on the raod swing the opposite way more aggressively than the steering input would suggest, especially compared to non-adaptive headlights if you are used to those.
If you have them, also read the manual carefully on the switch position. I forget the answer now on my D3--though I think it worked in any switch position. But on our 2013 Q5 with them, the switch must be in the "A" (automatic) position for the adaptive feature to work. If it is in the manual on position, oddly the adaptive does not function. Owner's manual makes clear in the extremely fine print details that it was set up that way.

You might try the VIN decoder thread. The report you get back is very detailed on the options.

I can think of 2 ways:
If the headlight part # ends in:
BG - Headlight-range adjustment: Headlight-range adjustment, automatic/ dynamic with fixed and dynamic bending light
BT - Headlight-range adjustment: Headlight-range adjustment, automatic/ dynamic with fixed and dynamic bending light
If you have PR code 8Q6 = Headlight-range adjustment automatic/ dynamic with fixed and dynamic bending light(AFS 2)
