Adaptive Headlights D#

Adaptive Headlights D#
I had to replace my passenger front until abut a year ago. God awful expensive. Now I occasional get a yellow warning light on the dashboard indicating there's an issue with one of the adaptive headlights, but the fault goes away after restarting the car and then reappears typically within a week. Anyone else experience this issue?

I think Mister Bally's short response is suggesting that this might be a common issue... as I have this exact symptom happen in my car, but it has been too low on my priority list, and thus I have not researched it to find out what the common point of failure is!

Thanks for the reply 97urS6. I didn't realize this was a common issue, but I can live with it for now. I love these cars, their aesthetics and road handling, but I'm concerned with the number of components which are non-serviceable (i.e., the motor in the adaptive headlamp unit); thus, requiring purchase of a entire headlamp housing when only a particular component has failed. This is my second A8 after owning several Bimmers over the years and I'm thinking its time for something a bit more reliable.

I have had the same issue for a year now. Search the board and you will find some good posts on common failures.
One to try (and cheap) is to pull the wiring harness from underneath the passenger light and check to see if any connectors have slipped back into the wire housing and thus leaving a gap. I tried this and used electrical spray and reconnected, but same warning error.
Another is to remove headlight and open...there you may see a small wire that has disconnected due to age. You need to have soldering skills to reconnect.
Finally, replace with a new light which is expensive.

My 07 started doing this within the last 10k miles. It has 204k now. It happens more often after parking with the wheels turned and starting up again at night or early morning when the lights turn on and cycle. Don't know which one is the problem though.

Use VCDS to test the each headlight movement while someone watches them for you, or pull up to a wall in a dark area to see movement of each light while testing with RT, if you do not have the Ross-Tech, pull the vehicle up to a wall in a darkened area and let the lights cycle, it will be very easy to see which light is not moving.

But I take it by Daudic's comment of not knowing which light is at fault, that Daudic has not scanned for the answer, so facing the wall is a quick show and tell...

No Doubt
Yep, you really need VCDS to TS this and so many other things. The output tests for the headlight leveling and curve lights you can do are very useful. Also, you'll need it to code a new module if you replace as well as put the lights into leveling mode.
