Default Advanced key battery

My 2004 A8 advanced key now only works intermittently and the instrument panel display says that the key needs a new battery. The operating manual says take it to the dealer, which is something I try to avoid after several bad experiences. Not only can I not see how to open the keys without risking damaging them but I can't find the procedure anywhere in Elsawin. I have heard a rumour that both keys will need batteries and reprogramming. If so I assume my vag-com will handle this.
Can anyone help?

Default replacing battery on advanced key

there is a simple plastic cover you can pop off and you simply replace the battery. first flip the key out and then pop off the cover. the battery is a watch battery that can be found at any drug store. i replaced mine and it took all of 10 seconds and a few bucks. i'm including a picture to help you out. of course this is assuming you don't need to reprogram for anything.

2032's are so common these days in things around the house. Sam's club sells multi-packs where each battery is under $2. I actually bought a couple of 2032's from a VW dealer for a not too bad $3.50 each a few years ago. Very nice VW/Audi packaging suitable to give as gifts. They looked nice in the trashcan!

I actually made a video for this yesterday because I saw lots on Youtube with the style of key that you must take in 1/2 but not the A8 style key.

However, I think that I need to resync it or something because the car says "no key identified" when I try and start it with the fob in my pocket. Any ideas? I just went and tried to start it with the key fob that I replaced the battery in but did so manually with the switch blade key. It started but then shut itself off twice. Is this some type of theft prevention mode? Any help on getting the car up and running I have a trip tomorrow I was planning on taking it on.
