After 5 new trunk motors, they finally fixed mine

I have been having repeated problems with my trunk opening up properly. When I press the button to open the trunk, it pops open an inch or so and just lies there trying to open and the lid won't open by itself.

I've got a 2005 A8L with an extended warranty (was bought CPO). Almost every time that I have taken the car in for service they have replaced the trunk motor. One time, they even said: "we replaced the motor but it still doesn't work properly. Your car must have been in an accident because it just won't work. sorry."

When I took the car in for the 85,000 mile service, I told them what I always tell them: the trunk lid isn't opening properly. They replaced the trunk motor again (under warranty), but this time said "We replaced the motor and Audi has an upgraded motor that we put in there". Now, when I open the lid it sounds like the motor is much more powerful and the darn thing really opens up better. (before it would just barely start moving).

My suggestion to those with problems: if your trunk lid is marginal, try to get yours replaced before your warranty runs out. I'd imagine that this motor costs a couple of grand to have installed.

thanks,

Navin

It J's possible they replaced it with the newer motor that works better. Part number would be nice. I think they are roughly $350. No more than an hour to install. Should be less than $500.

Or just have me stand next to the car and it will work properly. Just like things did for The Fonz on Happy Days. Although you are probably too young to know what I meant by that. Google & Youtube are your friends.

Oh I know what your talking about lol

Jeez.....

will you two just get a room?...

Navin, as Brozee says, could you get us a part number please? My boot lid opens ok once you get it past the initial 6" or so of travel... for reference, should it open (and close) completely unassisted from either the key fob or the door button?

Yes.

That's how mine works in cold weather - just the opposite of everyone else.

The early trunk motors are crappy now for some reason. You need to install the MY08 and newer metal housing trunk motor. The early plastic housing motors seem to be having issues right out of the box for some reason.

Thanks guys...

does anyone have a part # please?

Is this the part number for the new motor or is the number the same on all motors?

mishar 05-28-2012 07:03 AM

That's the newest one. Aluminum body, bigger motor. Only the last letter is different.

K9COP 05-28-2012 07:18 AM

that's interesting....

All the searches I did on that part number brought up the plastic bodied motor:(

I'm sure you're right Mishar, I suspect the images posted by the suppliers are not differentiated between the two motors...

The Part number that I started this thread about (i.e. that solved my problem and seems to be a better motor) is:

4EO-827-852-H

There wasn't a price for it because it was covered under warranty.

My 08 S8 is in for the 3rd time for the trunk opening. It does the same thing, opens about a half inch with the motor struggling then closes. They replaced the hinges first then the motor. Still does the same thing. Service manger told me it was because the motor was just on one side and I should just expect to have issues with it. It is in now again and I get it back tomorrow. I believe the issue is the latch not the motor or hinge. When it is trying to open I can lift hard enough to move the back of the car and it doesn't budge opening so it is clear to me the latch is not releasing. If I manually press the trunk release while it is trying to open the latch releases and it opens right up. The reason it comes up a little bit is because the part the latch catches is also motorized and lifts a bit expecting the trunk is going to open. When the trunk closes you can see it pull the trunk all the way down once the latch catches.

I was actcually able to show this to the service advisorer. No telling how the was translated to the service technician. The first time I had it in they told me it was fixed and when I went to open it to move stuff from the loaner car it just struggled to open but didn't. The second time it opened fine when I picked it up but wouldn't open as soon as I got home.

I am hoping they actually have it fixed this time, what a pain.

Old vs new. Old is the black plastic.

I had that same motor installed last fall. It is noticeable noisier, but I think it's due to it having more power as you state. The trunk opens much faster now and has worked flawlessly since changed.

NYCA8L 06-08-2012 11:08 AM

wow i got the same issue . opens a tad bit then drops down unless i give it a tiny push up when it opens . thanks for the part #.

adjust trunk first

i raised the down stop screw on the drivers side of the trunk just behind the hinge. i raised it as high as it could go and added a 1/4" spacer on top. this helps the trunk lift when the motor is engaged and it fixed the problem of the lid lifting only 1" when the trunk button was pressed.
