AMI Update
#31
Can I get the file emailed to me. Also i was curious if this would fix my problem. I have a 2008 Q7 and the ami doesn't work with my phone and i tested 2 phones (ami doesn't recognize device), so i was wondering if it was my cable or ami. If i buy the usb cable from amazon and have the file on the flash drive it should just come up on the screen right? Thanks.

AMI=Audi Music Interface
If you can pair your phone to make phone calls, the bluetooth is working fine - it has nothing to do with AMI.
AMI only has a 30 PIN ipod, the original one should work with any iphone, ipod 30pins connector.
You should go back to Q7 forum- I do have an 2008 Q7 - I modified the cable so it can stream music via bluetooth and also hooked up an iPhone 3 with music in it. Dual boot - auxiliary and iPhone.

Earlier poster should probably check w/ Q7 board. But I wonder if the question/issue isn't more basic and generic:
Thus, recognize that without a special adapter or mod, bluetooth music is NOT the same as "phone" bluetooth. Bluetooth music is AD2P. Thus if your other phones are working as phones but no bluetooth music can be transmitted/recieived, there is nothing wrong with car or AMI (or MMI software) for a 2007 vintage. Music (AD2P) got added in at factory level on A8 only with D4 in 2011, and probably similar timeframe for other models. You get more fidelity with the cable on a device with decent bit rates anyway. Old iPhones, iPods and other similar units for other brands used as players are sort of dime a dozen up to the 32G ones, which are thousands of tracks at high bit rate. If you want to stream though, need to get back to an AD2P interface/adapter.

My phone connects with bluetooth with no problem. i can make calls and answer no problem. However, i purchased a lightening cable for the AMI, and nothing happened. my iPhone 5 was still connected through bluetooth, but it wasn't connected with AMI. I wanted to listen to music through my phone and also be able to charge it. i was just wondering if the update would fix my problem, if the cable i have is wrong (white grommet Lightening cable), or if it's my phone.

You have to check the AMI cable. Different Audis do take different cables too. My D3 A8, Q5 and D4 S8 are all different cables, even if car end of some are nominally the same. If you have a non-Audi cable from eBay or Amazon or wherever, good luck...
If you are on AMI version of at least 3360 for USA, it runs AMI. Probably for Q7's they were all that version or higher. If it has an AMI plug in factory, it would logically have the minimum MMI version.

My 2008 Q7 with 4410 or 4140 is working fine. I'm not sure if 30 to 8 pins are compatible. I don't know if Audi make one for lightning because 2016 q5 still has the 30 pins

Just depends on which one you buy. I replaced the 30 pin on our 2013 Q5 w/ Lightning a couple of years ago. You can also use a 30 pin to Lightning adapter but you lose a few things at margin like cover art IIRC.

I didn't look into it, because my sister preferred streaming Spotify since she has unlimited data so I converted the cable to auxiliary for Bluetooth. Her Q5 has SD and USB so noneed hooking up iPhone. It's good to know that the lightning works. But I doubt it works for 2G, different interface and software.

AMI requirements / suggestions ...
Amended by the author in Nov 2018 to be slightly less confusing and again in 2020 to add more firmware versions
There are various confusing aspects to the Audi Music Interface [AMI] used in cars that run the 2G MMI, so I thought I'd try to help by giving you my thoughts on using an AMI with a D3 A8:
1) There are different AMIs for Audi cars; A8s [and other Audis] that use 2G MMI need the 'MOST bus' version of the hardware which is HW part number 4E0 035 785x. [The x represents different levels of the hardware but they all work the same, both in the US and Europe].
2) To add one, you need to be at or above MMI levels 3410 in the US and 3460 in Europe. You need these levels for the MMI to recognise the AMI when it's plugged in.
3) There are 6 firmware levels that I've seen for the unit; later versions supported more devices [USB drives] and more connections [Lightning etc.] Sadly, Audi never defined what firmware levels did what!
4) The original firmware was 0100. Subsequently I've seen 0170, 0700, 0830, 0840 and the final version 0850, which is dated 05.02.08 - May 2008. This final version updates the AMI with SW Part number 4E0 035 785F. [Don't confuse the HW part number of the AMI with SW part number installed in it. For some strange reason Audi gave the A8 AMI identical HW and SW part numbers; SW part numbers normally have 910 as the middle 3 numbers]! The HW number of an AMI will always stay the same; the SW number's suffix letter changes as you put new levels on.]
For the best solution it is recommended to go to 0850. This is available as a Zip file download which you put on a USB stick and attach to the AMI using the AMI to USB connector; it is also available on the last MMI Update CDs for US [4610] and EU [5570] but you'd need both the CD changer and the AMI installed to do this update as the MMI CDs MUST run off the CD player.
VCDS will show you the HW and SW version levels of an installed AMI [see attached text file AMI Version], but you can also check the AMI HW and SW levels using the Red 'MMI Info' screens. [See attached text file Red Menus].
