Default Solved: Any idea whats the solution to this? 4.2 Engine backfires/sluggish/unstable

2006 A8 L 4.2 BFM engine

I'm having the exact problem as the thread below and it totally disappears when fuel gets to 1/4 or less. Been through 4 sets of used fuel pumps but no change to the problem, so it couldn't be the fuel pumps. What do you guys think?

4.2 Engine backfires/sluggish/unstable when accelerating

Unplug the MAF and drive it around, see if it helps. If it does, time for a new MAF.

It’ll throw some codes when doing this, but the ECU will revert to a safe baseline fuel map without the MAF that is still able to run the engine smoothly, albeit not optimally, so it’s a good diagnostic technique.

Have you changed your fuel filter?

Well, look at it this way, if you haven't done it already, it probably needs it anyway.

Default Just unplugged MAF, both O2 sensor, EVAP purge valve and its running the same

as before. Exhaust smells like its running rich and has black soot on the tips.
