Default Battery Energy Module question...

Is there a model year after which the BEM software was corrected at the factory and new cars no longer came with a BEM that would indicate 10% remaining on the MMI Battery Monitor (as outlined in the service bulletin on upgrading software in the BEM)?

My local dealer wants 2 hours money to do the update and they claim sometimes the computer locks up and the customer is then charged for a new BEM. Nearest dealer other than here in KC is 4 hours drive, so that is not an option. Independents here do not have VAS capability in their computers, so that is not an option.

My thought was, if the problem was eventually solved at the factory, I would just find a used BEM from a car with good software. Would cost less than dealer update, and be less anxiety producing, in as much as they sound incompetent compared to those dealers members have mentioned that have performed the update in a matter of 15 or 20 minutes.
