Best Chairs?
 

Last fall my wife and I took a 2k road trip in her 2007 Volvo XC70, left the A8 home because we had freight to retrieve, a beloved family crib. Guess what? We both declared the Volvo's front seats more comfortable on a long drive than the A8's. Yeah, I understand we're both 70sih and a bit creaky but there it is.

One my first new owner rides was a 1969 Porsche 911s, followed by two Porsches, eight Volvos, four Audis and a single BMW M5L with a number of wagons and trucks in supporting roles; I like my high end European vehicles. As an overall best ride, I am not questioning the 2006 A8L, but the chairs? They tilt, tuck and extend, but are not up to the Volvo's.

What do you folks with those sophisticated derrieres have to say?

I have yet to dose off in my A8 during any long trips. I can't say that about any other vehicle I've owned. I'm 20 years younger than you though. Also, I've never owned a Volvo. I rented one in Quebec City. Noting special or worth noting.

I've driven over 1100 miles in a day by myself in several cars. I like the A8 seats the best so far.

I went from a 2004 Volvo S80 T6 to a 2007 A8 and I must admit that ths S80 seats are awfully comfortable. I called them the Ikea Barcoloungers......

I will grant you that the seats in high-end Volvos are excellent.
 

But the A8 is the only car I've ever driven eight straight hours and could have gone longer.

The best seats I've had were the Recaro seats in my old Jetta GLI. They had very few adjustments, but were remarkably comfortable. I'd say the A8's are behind those, followed by the ones in my S500.

The Recaro's in my '80 VW Scirocco S (I had two identical ones-1st was totaled) were nice and comfy. But I don't think anything like the ones in my A8. All mechanical adjusting, 5 speed tranny and the ultimate thing to tire me out; crank windows and manual locks!

i have a pretty bad back and some muscle/nerve damage...

i found 3 cars that had good seats...

Audi A8
BMW 750 series
BMW 5 series 20 way comfort seats.

i went with the 5. the adjustable position for shoulders and thigh support makes a big difference.

I have an 1980 Rabbit Convertible with the sport seats. They're the same ones the Scirocco had. They're good seats, but not nearly as nice as the real Recaros they put in the '88 Jetta GLI. They were manual fore and aft, power up and down at the back and manual dial recline. There was something about the shape of those seats that fit me perfectly.

My old D2 A8L had comfier seats than my D3 A8L.....
 

I know I'm not the only late model A8L owner to feel this way. Those D2s have a lot going for them....wish I would have kept mine.

balloon material must be in short supply....
 

Previous generation m3 has a lumbar support that keeps going, and going, and going. You can blow it up as big as you would ever want it.

This makes sense, of course, since there is NO downside and NO cost involved in this. The cost benefit analysis of a big lumbar balloon is NO cost and ALL benefit.

The a8 balloon blows up a little bit. You can get a bit of back support. The only possible explanation for this is that there must be a shortage of balloon material in the world.
