Default Confused Dash Lights?

I've noticed that my instrument cluster lights up when it's sunny, but fades when in the shade. It makes it hard to see the speedo when driving in darker areas. Shouldn't it lighten up when it's dark and fade when it's sunny? The dash lights work fine when turning on the headlights. It seems to be an issue with the auto dimming feature. Thanks for your input.

That's on purpose. Audi wants you to leave the switch in auto mode. The dash lights dim as an alert to turn parking lights on as a minimum. I know, it sucks when going through a short tunnel or under a long bridge during the day.

I was wondering the same thing. I do not use the auto feature since it headlights turn on/off for short periods of time. I've read somewhere it's not optimal to turn on/off HIDs for short periods of time.

It does it on Auto too where mine are always set.

I thought I was going blind or having a stroke last fall while driving and everything on the dash and center console changed brightness.

Even if you keep the dash illumination set very low, it will over-ride and brighten.
No easy work around methinks.

I guess I could have the dealership vag com it for dash lights to always be on... if there's a code for that. I'll have to do some searching. Thanks for the input guys.

VCDS Needles and Scales ON will do the trick.

I've used VCDS to try all the different dash light settings. During Summer the headlamp switch is usually in the off position. Fall through Winter gets the **** moved to automatic.

I like being able to see the gauges at all times. I tried just the needles for a while. It was cool but didn't really accomplish what I was after.

I finally used VCDS to set both the gauges, and the needles, to on at all times. I like that much better, even if it isn't quite as cool.

I still wish I could program the needle sweep on start-up though.

Carry on...
