Converting Japanese MMI + Radio + Nav to ROW?

Don't do that. It probably won't work and if it does it can brick your module.
Do you have access to the hidden menu? There is command Start Bootloader. That's the one you need. Don't forget to hook a battery charger.

The Japan radio converters here told me they do flash the MMI to Euro spec... I figured fudging the "Region" value is the same as setting "Ignore Region" coding in the Hidden Menu, so has the same risks.
Ill try the VagCom route again.

So got my new Vag-Com cable today (Ross-Tech postage from US to NZ was super fast!) and have the ROW spec Radio on the way from Mike.
Have to wonder now what the point of actually trying to convert the MMI to "not-Japanese" is now though.. the replacement radio should actually just work as is, I dont have a Navigation DVD disc for NZ and the Nav is somehow physically connected differently (in theory) and I have no idea how that weird ETC box is interfaced.
The MMI stuff itself is already in English (as its listed as a language along side Japanese). If I could get a more normal Sat Nav operation going then yeah, but without that Im starting to see this as pointless (also I got a Kivic One which is working fine on the TV unit Aux).. even AMI support wouldnt be a killer app as the Kivic One already does that job better.

So have you tried a full auto scan now you have the can version of the cable?
I too have the kivic one, great piece of kit, now I want to get the mimicsx2 ordered and installed for touchscreen operation.

To follow on:
- Changing the Tuner Region in the hidden menu to US or Europe gets the full FM band to display but no radio stations at all can be tuned in, so clearly there is more to it than that.
- I tried the bootloader update with the CD version linked earlier and sadly now stuck as the version is too new (was trying the 5570 CD3 pack, which is 1110 to 5150 then to 5570):
Missing HMI section in metainfo
Guess Im going to have to try find and burn a dozen of these to fix this now..
EDIT:
Found 2120 CD image and no change, still "Missing HMI Section in Metainfo".. I figure I need 0500 to 1100 update or something very specific.
EDIT2:
Tried older US versions too... it rejects all firmware versions I could find.. Its possible that version 1100 (4E0 906 961 H) or lower would work and get me by this bit but absolutely nowhere to be found online.
Had to pull fuse 12 out of the passenger side box to kill power to the screen (which is stuck on permanently) so I can drive to work in the morning. Frustrating.

So managed to get sent the 1100 firmware from a diff forum and recovered it somewhat. Now it boots in German and goes straight to SWUpdate. Unfortunately it cannot read the CD (drive) any longer, its not the CDR's, it doesnt even try to access the device. I suspect some recording in VCDS is needed to get it moving along the firmware update train again..?

That's progress at least I honesty thought from what you said about using the boot loader that the unit would be bricked. Have you tried the region ignore again in the hidden menu to see if you can make it to the next step

I cant get into the Hidden Menu (though havent tried to see if I need to reenable it in VCDS) however the error now isnt region, its just not talking to the CD. It basically got some updates from the FW 1100 CD then stopped being able to see the CD it had just updated from.
