A Couple Questions about my '04 A8
Hi All .. Been a while. Wondering if anyone has had these issues.
1) Car is running hot (not on the temp guage but for 3-4 hours after I pull in my garage you can still feel the heat)
- Also, when I start the already warm car and turn on the climate control (AC and non AC) HOT air blows out.
2) Transmission takes an extra 20 seconds to shift into drive when car is cold - then kinda slams into drive.
3) Ambient temp reads very high when I start the car .. but then gos back to a normal reading after about 5 minutes of driving.
I am taking it to the dealer on Monday .. but I have very little faith in my dealer

Maybe some ideas
1a. After run heat is normal. On my C5 4.2 it is the same 4 hour type cool down in a garage on a moderate or hot day. The W12 is a few more hours even.
1b. Seems characteristic of D3's from prior posts. Mine (2006 W12, but HVAC is basically the same) blows warm air briefly, but I wouldn't call it hot. W12's have basically an antiback flow valve that I think is relevant to this condition. Ties into the afterrun electric coolant pump so warm water doesn't get pumped thru heater core. I'm suspicious of mine. Don't know if 4.2's use an afterrun coolant pump or maybe just a straight on off valve (my 96 C5 had a set up like that); if so could be a similar situation.
2. That sounds like low ATF fluid. Have it checked.
3. Have coolant sensor checked; common older Audi fail part, though not sure on yours.

My engine has the same heat-throwing behavior as yours; I'm guessing it's the nature of a big V8. The engine undertray may also be keeping the heat around longer than if it wasn't there.
I'll get a short blast of hot air when I first turn the A/C on, but it goes away quickly. Most likely it's the engine heating the air in the vent ducting.
I haven't experienced the transmission shifting problem; that doesn't sound normal and I'd be curious what the dealer says about it.
When you say "ambient temp," are you referring to the outside air temp? If so, mine does the same thing; it can be as much as 15 degrees higher than the actual air temp. The owner's manual says on p. 27 that engine heat will cause that to happen, so I don't worry about it.
