I started a thread here regarding a no start problem 3 or 4 years ago. I recall mentioning that I noticed long start times just prior to being stranded. Once the no start happened, vcds pointed me right to the bad part. I and others have commented to several other posts with the same symptoms.

Hint: on most VW and Audi engines produced in the past 20 years (engines with coil packs, not distributors for the ignition system), there is exactly ONE sensor that, if failed, will cause a no-start condition. All other engine sensor failures will cause poor running conditions, but the engine will run.

And the answer is: Engine Speed Sensor!

It is bolted from below into front of transmission, flywheel area.

Would you possibly have a part number for that sensor?
Thanks, Mike

Keep in mind, that's for the car in your signature. The 4.2 BFM is a different motor, and could have a different part. I hope that does the trick!

Thanks Jack, That part will be for the car in my sig. Btw, did you run across a decent write-up on replacing that part?
