I have been digging through multiple forums and I haven't been able to find any definitive answers. Hoping someone from this site can help. I have a 2008 Audi A8L (D3). The issue started with the TPMS light coming on, then i got the "Parking Break Malfunction" light. I also notice the steering got tight as if the power steering was out. As I drove down the highway I notice the doors unlocking and locking by themselves. Then the info screen on the instrument cluster went from a red "blank" screen to black then back to normal. The radio cut out as well as the A/C. This went on of a mile or so then everything went back to normal with the exception of the TPMS light and the Parking break. I was able to make it home and ran an auto scan. It seems from what I am reading on other sites there is either a CAM communication issue or the ECU is dieing or has died. Im hoping some one that is a little more seasoned with reading these scans can give me an idea of what's going on.

Much of the car ECU communication goes through Address 19 'CAN Gateway'. This many apparently unrelated faults may be due to a 'flaky' Gateway ECU.

Some of your codes look unrelated to comms. though; clear as many codes as you can, run the car again and then see what's left with another Autoscan.

How old is the battery? If any signs it is fading or if by chance still the original, I would replace. If battery is newer and seems good, try disconnecting for 30-60 minutes. Then clear all codes module by module (not the clear all supposed choice, which often doesn't work) and rescan.

Big picture, D3's can get flaky electrically when battery is headed south. Sometimes the old fashioned disconnect can relieve electrical indigestion they seem to sort of get, maybe also tied to failing battery. After that, scan can be looked at again--too much "noise" now.

Thanks for the reply. I know that I have had the car for 3.5 years and I have never changed the battery so it is very likely that the battery could be failing. I will try to disconnecting and clearing the codes and see what I get.

I tried disconnecting the battery for about an hour, cleared all of the codes that would clear and re-scanned. This second scan did look a little better but there are still a few moduals there are not communicating. (See scan results below)

I checked the voltage at the battery and it as 11.7v Could these issues be caused by a failing alternator??

11.7V is a flat battery. Roughly: 100% 12.65V, 75% 12.45V, 50% 12.24V, 25% 12.06V, FLAT 11.89V

Your scan shows Address 61 - Battery Manager has 'going flat' faults recorded on 5July at about 1.44. I'm not sure why you can't clear those.

You ARE running VCDS and Autoscan with the engine running, aren't you? Uwe Ross at Ross Tech is on record as saying the A8s pull the biggest load of all out of Batteries. Unless you have a charger that can supply 25A connected, you need to have the engine running to use VCDS for any length of time.

WIth the engine running, you can check the alternator output [it varies on A8s as they have an 'intelligent' alternator] but the 'battery voltage' should be above 13V with the engine on. [You're actually measuring the alternator output, not the battery voltage].

A8 batteries are typically about 90-100 AH [Amp Hours]. A flat battery at 11.7V will take hours to charge up to full [12.6V]. You need to get the battery up to 12.6V before you start analysing whether the battery or alternator is duff, but running the engine will [should?] provide the necessary voltage to power all the car's ECUs and run scans and clears.

+1 in general. You mentioned having car for 3 ½ years and no battery change on your watch. Battery is far more likely the failure point than alternator, if there is a charge issue. Cheap and easy to do too, like 10-20% of the money (part only) and 1/100 the work.

Also when was last time it was tuned. Misfires across multiple cylinders but no codes for lean or something like that suggest maybe needs basic tune up. Or, maybe some bad coil packs if tune up is recent/already done.

To follow up...So it seems that the battery was the main cause of the problems I was seeing. I ended up going to the dealer for the battery. After coding in the new battery and clearing all of the codes things started to stabilize.

As far as the misfires, I am starting with a new mass airflow sensor that I will get installed today. Considering the age of the car, I will also work on getting the tuneup as well.
