Remap, anyone had one? Is it worth it?
Hi Guys,
I have a 2006 4.2 TDI and am considering having it remapped.
Has anyone with a 4.2 TDI on here had it done and what did you think of it?
I have had a remap on my A4 1.9 TDI and it was great. My concerns are with the A8 having the sports mode already will it make much difference?
Any comments are welcome but i'm really interested in comments from people who have actually had it done.
Thanks

By all accounts a remapped 4.2tdi is a real rocketship because of the massive torque. As quick or maybe a little quicker than an S8 or W12. Similar performance feel to a C5 RS6 apparently.

Remapping turbo Diesel is the best that remapping can get. More air by controlling turbos and than more fuel results in a real gain. As far as I know they bust 4.2 TDI up to 404 HP at the peak, but power difference to a gas engine is much bigger on lower rpm's. The best of all is that driving normally (slowly) it doesn't burn any more fuel than before remapping.
On the downside: only 6 cylinder A8 TDI are available in North America and Diesel fuel is more expensive than premium gas.

Remapping any forced induction motor frequently yields fantastic results, and this is very much true for diesels. If I had a TDI, I would certainly be running aftermarket software on it.

I got my remap from AMD in Thurrock, Essex. It's right next door to lakeside shopping centre.
The cost was £499. I was quoted £250 by someone else but I have used AMD in the past on my A4 so I went with them.
I will try and attach the graph for you.
Before remap
Power 352.6hp @ 3716 rpm
Torque 523.1 lb ft @ 3155 rpm
After remap
Power 390.2hp @ 3559 rpm
Torque 653.2 lb ft @ 2415 rpm

That's a nice result. Not a bad price too. I think you did right taking it to someone like AMD. They know their stuff and I think the A8 has 2 ECUs that need to be remapped and cloned correctly or you can brick them apparently.
Did you have the DPFs removed too or were they left in?
Also, do AMD re-map for you free of charge in case of dealer or someone else accidentally over-writing map with a standard one?
