Tony, as long as it meets either 502.00 or 504.00, that's fine. The compliant xW-30 oils are virtually as thick as a 5W40.

David, that was done in another thread last week. Bottom line: doesn't meet any VAG spec.
OTOH, once out of warranty, one can run pretty much anything they want, right?

I have always used 0w-40 in South Texas. I have driven in 100+ F with 90% humidity. Cooked a couple coil packs in traffic.
The car came with fresh Mobil 1. I swapped to Castrol after a few changes. The 0w-40 Castrol I have, (30 quarts) has the VW label and was manufactured in Germany.
I will iuse Castro till it runs out. That is not that long, we have three cars that use 0W-40. Plus I like to change at 5,000 miles. May go back to Mobil 1 after the German made Castrol is not available..

If you want some expensive repairs, run non VAG oil. The first thing that wears is the cam chain guide slippers. The slipper is an integral part of the tensioner. Each tensioner is worth about $800. There is an upper and lower guide. Total for parts? $3200 if I recall correctly. The cheap chinese tensioners don't last. No free lunch when it comes to that. That is the reason why my son opted to change the engine in his D2 S8. It was cheaper to swap the engine than buying the parts.

Gosh, now we have to add the 5 page long approved oil list--with ones available everywhere from Wallywold to Amazon to the corner parts store--in to the other subjects that are either verboten or bad form like politics and religion, or seem to generate more replies than it takes to change all the proverbial light bulbs on a chandelier. So, I'll add approved oils--not just "which" but now "whether" to tires, brake pads, and various other bits. Love boiling the ocean.
Hey, the weather today is nice.
