Default Engine overheating

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum so my apologies if I posted this thread in the wrong forum/discussion.

My 2009 Audi S8 v10 (with 120k km) recently started running hot. I am trying to figure out what it could be (radiator, fan, thermostat, water pump?). Here is the situation:

-When driving constantly, the temp gauge shows a normal 90C (12 o'clock position).
-However, in stop and go traffic, traffic jams, at traffic lights, etc. it occasionally goes above 90C. Not much, barely to the next line, not above 110C. This doesn't always happen in stop and go traffic/ traffic jams/ traffic lights. Only sometimes. It never did this before, though.
-After a 40 minute drive, when I park the car and the engine is still running, in idle, the front of the car is much louder than it used to be.. that fans are running very loud, and the grill in the front is very very cool (probably because of the intense fan speed?)
-When I turn the car off, sometimes the fans stay on for 10-20 seconds, but mostly they just shut off along with the engine.

What's your best guess?

My best guess is a thermostat failing partially open. Enough to allow some cooling flow, but not enough to keep up with the demands placed on the system.

+1. You should also scan it with VCDS to see if there are any codes relating to the thermostat or otherwise. VCDS, probably not a generic OBDII tool that may not see those kinds of codes if there is no check engine light currently.

Thanks, i'll get it looked at. Is it bad to drive it while it has this issue? I mostly drive on the highway, which should cool the engine enough, right?

Not necessarily. If water isn't being circulated, then you could drive it at highway speeds at -20 C and it would still overheat.

Textbook symptoms, textbook solution. Be happy you're not one of the guys with a timing belt motor who did that job 10k miles ago when the thermostat fails.
