With the Bosch pumps, they get noticeably louder. Annoyingly loud. After a couple weeks, the car suddenly loses power for a second while accelerating. You get a warning. Heed it.
With the VDO assembly in the D3's you get 30 seconds of running and then the engine starves from no fuel. You can shut off the car and restart to limp the car to wherever. This is what happens when the right side pump goes bad which is usually the one that goes first.

does that explain why mostly my car starts right up but sometimes it wouldnt start, unlike my lincoln which just quit starting all together. when it does drive sometimes theres no difference noticeably but after a while it will feel weak, or sometimes it feels weak from the start. i have tried driving it a few times just doing simple stuff to help with diagnosing...and could the fuel pump also be whats causing my o2 sensor bank 2 reading below efficiency on the cat. Is all this relating to the fuel pump? my goal is to install both pumps, spark plugs, and fuel filter. when hooking the hoses and unhooking them is there anything needed to know about the bottom side of the pump or does everything hook on the top of the assembly. im doing the whole assembly btw.

Replace the left as well. They look identical except for the fittings. The left will go out on you too if the right is bad.
Getting in there it is not a hard job but working with the fuel in an enclosed space is a bitch. Make sure and disconnect the batteries first. I also recommend some kind of respirator for organic solvents. I had a REALLY bad headache for a day after, not smart.

thats bad-***, you done some serious labor, im kinda dreading doing my timing chain on my 06. Its not bad yet but i know i need to prepare. About the fuel pump tho, is it tricky getting it to lock in place in the bottom. I've seen videos only on the 2000 a8 and nobody has anything up with details installing and seating the pump. i looked closely at the image on autozone.com but i wont have it in my hand until Thursday. I will be getting a respirator thanks! I noticed my fuel pump unlike the 2000 a8 is a straight cylindrical tube and doesn't have any angles in the design as its predecessor.

It definitely goes into place on an angle. Good idea on the respirator. My son had a headache for several hours after R & R'ing mine.
The service manual or All Data etc subscription is well worth it for these cars.
