Default Gas/Fuel Smell?

Greetings AW,

Well, so far my D3 A8 4.2 has been a dream to own, and I’ve recently been noticing a smell of gas coming from the car on cold-starts, and occasionally when the car is warm.

It is quite hard hard to pinpoint where it’s coming from, and there are no leaks, at least not visible ones.

Can anybody point me in the in the right direction for this? The injectors? Fuel lines? Fuel filter?

P.S. there is no rough-idle or shaking of the engine, as far as I can tell.

(Note: being a 2009, my car is FSI)

Your help would really be appreciated.

Thanks!

Gasoline can be hard to detect as a leak because it evaporates so quickly and easily. Start with trying to pinpoint where on the car the smell is strongest. Without more to go on, there is no way to narrow it down beyond the entire fuel system. There are no common fuel leak spots I know of.

Default 2009 S8 V10 Smell Gas during cold start

Hey there,

Were you able to figure out the gas smell? I have exactly the same issue. Usually happens when the car is really cold at start up, there is a strong smell of gas coming through the vents.

Im having a gas smell too in my 08’ . I smell it on drivers side in the areas in between PCV, purge valve , oil filter housing area. Injectors , carbon clean, sparks, coils probably 200 miles since.
car runs fine no misfires ,nothing too odd , I’m going to run some tests using VCDS today to check fuel trims and see if anything is fishy. My fuel economy is not bad and no visible leak ,my suspicion is possibly external leaking injector.
Anybody have tips how to determine or troubleshoot?

Any feedback on this? Dealing with a similar issue. Strong gas smell after the car is sitting in the garage for a while. seems it looses fuel pressure slightly when it sits. new fuel filters, new fuel pumps and spark plugs; gas mileage doesn't seem to be affected. Hard to pinpoint where the smell is coming from exactly. Will need to dig into it more but figure you might have an idea already from your experience.

I had an issue and mine turned out to be the feed line that connects to the fuel rail. It is a rubber line that comes from the passenger firewall area. Might be different on a non W12 though.

I found mine. It was the metal line going to the fuel rail. This is on S8 tho, I used a 16mm crowsfoot socket , tightened it up. I got a suggestion from Greg B on YouTube who has some write ups on here , to buy a “Combustible Gas detector”. Bought one on Amazon, I used that device to detect the gas leak.
