Ultimate Thread Hijack, Mister Bally! :) WICKED car Brozee!
And now Mister Bally has his avatar pic (which I've been trying to load here for the last half hour GRRR : https://forums.audiworld.com/attachm...1&d=1405390654
...
After Salt Lake City, we took my '04 A8 onto the Bonneville Salt Flats and the Bonneville Int'l Speedway. Check out the pictures; note, the car had 216,000 miles on the clock, transmission was kept in 5th gear, and of course the speed limiter has been deleted. Both my son & I were in the car, it was loaded with luggage and about 100# of pinball machine parts we were taking to a friend in Temecula. Not too bad for a ten year old Audi.
That is salt, not snow on the car.
I plan to eventually post a video on youtube.

Not to continue this "HIJACK",
But, what was the rpm reading at 172 mph in fifth gear, and what do you think would have happened if you went into sixth, would she have lost her pull, and what the hell would my W12 do, with the 135 mph limit removed?

Based on power, gear ratios and some loose calculations:
172 mph > 5th gear > 6113 rpm
172 mph > 6th gear > 4873 rpm > not enough power so she would slow down in 6th
W12 with the same gear ratio as 4.2 will be faster in the 6th gear but won't crack 190 mph.
S8 with shorter final drive and 6th gear should be able to go 197 mph.
No way that Phaeton can go 200 mph.

More; W12's...
For what its worth, if you search YouTube you can find a fair number of videos for D3 W12's (6.0) up to about 280kph. There is one the poster says is chipped to maybe 500HP that ran to 295kph on a track with GPS mounted in the camera view. That's the fastest video I have come upon.
The poster estimates it might get to 300kph max since in the run they were using "regular." I have a hunch though is the poster means Euro 95 (our 91+) instead of Euro 100 +--their "Super" stuff. The video also clearly shows the speedo error that looks like the better part of 20kph at these higher levels; would also explain a lot of the claims out there. I know a W12 fitted w/ 18's (255's) was car magazine tested back in the day in Germany with a 5% error on the speed from one review (in German) I have seen; the 275's on mine have very little error. Even variances in just running the 18's, 19' or 20's will affect the speedo video's.
Since the W12 is governed to 155/250kph in Europe IIRC (130 in US), almost by definition there will be some modding on the higher speed runs. W12 and S8 are supposedly both hard to chip and hard to find places offering it--twin ECU's for anything over 8 cylinders, and you have to write simultaneously to both boxes to get either box to accept the change to the other box.
W12 gearing is more leisurely than the 4.2 and then of course the S8. Thus its legs are actually longer than either of the other two gearing wise in a 5th gear pull. But the redlines vary too, and the S8 can go higher up, while the W12 offset crank/rod stuff means you probably don't really want to push the revs beyond spec.
Phaeton comparo's are yet harder. Starts downgraded to 420HP IIRC and it is steel and a good amount heavier. It has the old ZF 5 speed unreliable D2 tranny. But then not clear to me where it would land on the gearing vs. the redlines either. Hard to believe it could outrun the Audi flavor, but then likewise I don't quite see 300kph stock either from what is out there on the D3 W12 or with our standard premium. If you throw in 20kph of speedo error sure, but that not true speed like a top speed instrument measured claim.

First, Sorry for the thread hijack. I really just wanted Brozee to see that I am still alive. I know I should have started another thread. Again, my apologies.
As for the RPM's, I may have the tach on the video that's on Ballykids's phone. He said he recalls about 5500 RPM at 170. We felt it would not pull much higher inn 6th gear so we kept it in 5th.
More important, there is one hell of an adrenaline rush when you are doing something like this for the first time. Difficult to explain. Believe me, with the way the steering felt on the salt, I was apprehensive going past 130. However, Ballykid then showed me the Top Gear UK episode from Bonneville shot in 2013 and when I saw Jeremy Clarkson take the Corvette to 176, I knew we would be OK.
Again, I firmly believe the we could go faster on normal pavement. I don't know if it is 5, 15 or 20 MPH faster, but with a lighter load and the different coefficient of friction, I'l guess at least an indicated 180. Not bad for a ten year old car with (now) 223,000 miles on the odometer. I have never had an alignment done on the car and it still tracks perfectly straight. Recall I changed the driver's front bushings and wheel bearing just before this road trip. At those speeds, if the steering pulled anywhere off of center, a disaster would be imminent.

Welcome back. That is a beautiful S5. I knew you would return to an Audi. Just an educated guess because going from an D3 W12 to a Lexus ES, you would miss that Audi art of engineering.

Sweet S5! I'm 27 and glad to see someone my age who also isn't into big ugly aftermarket rims and such.
