Jack mode if lifted by hoist-necessary?

Just wondering if the car needs to be in jack mode if it's lifted on a hoist.
I always change(swap) my own wheels but if I decide this year to take it to a shop do I have to worry about this.
Thanks

Yes. If a wheel is being removed, jack mode should be applied.

What I'm not sure of is if jack mode is needed when using car ramps?

Jack mode is not necessary on ramps.

Why is that? I don't believe my mechanic did that recently when he did the rear brakes.

You only need it when you take the weight off a wheel and shock then fully extends. Using ramps is no different as far as the car is concerned than driving up a steep hill.

And FWIW, even from wrenching on it 10 years and lifting it probably 100 times, car doesn't turn to pixie dust or spontaneously combust if you blow it and forget, or the mechanic does same. Typical worst that happened to me is the suspension dumps right after you lower the jack, and then it takes a few minutes to pump back up and trim to normal. Of course if your compressor is already weak with a pre existing leak, a level sensor is screwed up, or whatever, this is when you may find out it has other (pre-existing) issues.

Jacking it up a corner at a time requires jacking mode. Putting it on a lift where all 4 wheels leave the ground at the sane time, it can tell itís on a lift, so automatically engages jacking mode.

One would think it should know, but I had both my 04 A8L 4.2 and 05 A8L W12 both fall to the ground when lowering the lift because I forgot to put it in jacking mode....
So I guess it thought the vehicle was to high and released all the air.

Yeah, stupid auto correct, and stupid me for not checking before I hit send!

That "very" thing happened to me. I will say that it looks kinda cool when all of the air is out of the bags. Makes for some great pictures!
