MMI Display replacement gears.

R.I.P. Mishar,.. I was saddened to hear of his departure. I haven't been on the forum for awhile as my 2005 A8L has been treating me very well.

I came across Mishar's post about replacing the plastic gears in the MMI pop-up display carriage. My unit has started to click at the end of the raise cycle, and his diagnosis is evident that the unit will fail completely. He spoke of a replacement gear made from metal. Does anybody have information on where to get these? Or is this something that he manufactured himself? It seems he was one of those talented individuals that loved not only to discover the solutions, but create them as well.

May his wisdom and character be well remembered.

I found this kit on ebay from the United Kingdom, the rest seem to be from China. The UK ones are made of brass and the Chinese ones of copper. My experience is Chinese suppliers have loose tolerances, but they might be alright. I think Mishar made his own and he had already sold his remaining sets long ago.

I have a decent kit that I did not use (I ordered a full replacement). I do not have Mishar's. If you're interested, $10 + shipping and they're yours. Just PM me if interested.

Thanks
Naudi

Be careful where you order them from. I got some from these guys, and they do not fit..

I am about to order these, as the company is here in the US, not based in China. They say they have sold several and report to have had any complaints.

More info needed about the issue with the first set.

Just leave it open
I was reading a post where someone just put a switch in line with the signal wire for open/close

Isn't there already a button on the trim panel for that? Besides, I would rather it work as designed, if it only costs $30 for the gears.

The screen opens automatically on startup and closes on shut down, nothing about the button changes that. The modification keeps the screen up at all times, but does not force anything to stay awake. I do agree, I prefer things work as designed.

I just disconnected the wire to the motor on mine.
Stays up all the time.
It does show up as a limit switch fault when that system is scanned in VCDS.
