Default My 2004 D3 is electronically haunted again!

MMI screen locked up, then today is will not pop out from the dash...no Sirius, system settings, CD, Radio, Nav or telephone functions.

I'm also having them check the rough tranny shifting problem via the TB that was discussed last week.

Maybe I'll continue all this fun for another 3 years and put my order in for the S550!

Default What makes you think MB S550 is going to be any better?

It's German and it's got more electronic gadgets than any other automobile out there.

Default If it appears that the MMI is crashing rather than being

able to boot all of the way up, the problem may be with your MMI button module. This happened to me. If the MMI senses that one or more buttons are pressed during boot, the computer can hang or crash.

I am not the only one who has had the button pack fail (no spiilage in my case, just a failed part).

Good luck.

Mike

Another thing I'm told to look for is a crimp in the cable leading to the screen

Default Dear god, not a POS Mercedes!

If you think Audi has quality and reliability problems (which they have a lot of), you haven't seen anything until you have owned any newer (early 2000s onward) Mercedes' (which, like the newer-mid 2000s-BMWs, have horrific enough quality and reliability to make Audi seem like Toyota and Lexus by comparison). Might I suggest the new Lexus LS Series with all wheel drive (which is gorgeous, IMO). Hopefully, the new Lexus LS Series will have soul like the A8/A8L and 7 Series with the legendary Toyota and Lexus quality and reliability that nobody can touch. Anyone can dig that.

Default 03 A6 27 2 04 A842 has an excellent point

The new S Class will likely make the A8/A8L seem like a Toyota or Lexus from a quality and reliability standpoint. Yes, I am 100+% aware that Audi is very, very far (maybe even dangerously so) from Toyota and Lexus in quality and reliability. But Mercedes (and BMW) are enormously further from Toyota and Lexus in quality and reliability than Audi is these days.

Default 2006 A8 amkes the 2004 A8 like a Lexus! :)

Seriously though, the A8 in general has been quite reliable compared to its German counterparts.
Never have you seen (or barely) writen in a magazine that the whole car shut down while driving.
This has had happened on the S Class AND 7 series.

Default It is most often just a stuck button. My NAV button stuck yesterday for the first time..

It's easy to tell as the red light next to it stays lit. You have to gently pry it "up" with your finger nail. It seems the button sometimes get off center and yoou don;t hear the distinctive "click".
