Default Not working; 30-pin iPod cable w/ MMI 2G-Hiwhat am I doing wrong?

I am running the latest North American MMI for the vehicle, 46.1.0, and have had success with it with the AUX cable. I have the AUX adapter plugged in with a Bluetooth dongle at the end, feeding in via the 3.5mm jack, so I am able to pair to that dongle and listen thru the 3.5mm jack.

I ordered a 30-pin iPod adapter and they shipped two of them. I tried both cables on both an iPod Touch Generation 2, and a jailbroken iPhone 4, to no luck. I get a message about the device "may not be working properly" or something along those lines. I have charged both of them outside of the vehicle so they have full batteries when I plug them in. When I go to SOURCE , I see the Audi Music Interface (AMI) and that's it. I then unplug it and plug in my AUX cable, and I am able to play music through the iPod to the car by controlling the iPod by hand and having its music stream thru the headphone jack (3.5mm).

But, yet, no control of the songs and whatnot via the car and the 30-pin adapter.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Naudi Guy

Several versions of the cable exist for MMI, depending on which Audi it is for. If you got generic special from Amazon or FleaBay or wherever, yet another wrinkle. Even if you ordered it from dealer, it has to be the "right one." They are color coded with molded in bands near the connector--red, blue, just black, etc. For example, my D3 one would not interchange with my Q5 one, even using the same identical iPod player. Definitely know this for the 30 pin ones; didn't keep up w/ it for the Lighting ones I later ended up using.

My car came with that 30 pin cable and all I can say is that it works great with my Ipod Touch 4. Total integration into the car's system. I'll see if there's a part number on that cable.

No number but it's got the blue band.

Read one of my posts that explains how the AMI cable works then you'll figure out why cables sold on eBay seldom work. Someone on my channel just asked me to modify his cable for a 2008 A5.
Blue band is 3g, the internal iPod resistance is 18k ohms and the 2G is 1.8k. The resistance for aux is 900 ohms for all 2G & 3G. You can only use one at a time unless you make one like mine that can switch from 1.8k iPod to 900 ohms auxiliary for Bluetooth streaming.

Cheers,
Louis

Here is the cable I made. The 30-pin bluetooth dongle has no ground loop noise, it's cheaper to use than the other bluetooth that needs ground loop noise.

Cheers,
Louis

Thanks ltooz. Here's the cables I got and the screen display. Only one cable is shown, the one with the blue ring and the Audi label, the other one is very identical. I show a iPod touch second gen but I also tries iPhone 4 rooted/jail broken. No dice.

So you tried two different cables and different media devices with no go...so we can probably assume for the moment that cables and devices are fine, it 's something with the car. I'm just not sure where to start. Seems like some sort of reset is the first try? Basic settings reboot? Is that possible?

Like I was suggesting...and some easy Google work confirmed:

so cool, you got the 2008 and up A8 cable. Now, just find the ride for it and you are all hooked up.

See: https://shops.audi.com/en_GB/web/acc...-4f0051510k-10 Click on model usage after you see it is displaying the "K" part number.

Or if you just can't part with that old 2004, try "L" and just read the text there: https://shops.audi.com/en_GB/web/zub...-4f0051510l-10

Alternatively, fly back across the ocean and just type your model year into audiusaparts.com from the get go and avoid the heartache and extra EBay cost when it is kaputt. Presto, yep it's an "L": https://www.audiusaparts.com/index.php?p=catalog&mode=scat&scatgrp=audio-video&scatsubgrp=cables Cable started as an "E" BTW, as the link in my sig has said for many years. The later one may give you album art, but I haven't looked at that in a long time and am on to the D4 and Q5 versions. Again, I do know first person from owning several Audi models and a couple of platforms and eras that the cables may seem the same (except for the banding they adopted after the early E cable), but they do not cross over as plug and play. Thus, BOTH the connector end AND the "car end" vary, even if it physically goes in the plug area.

Wait... Since it's a 2004, it must all be retrofit anyway, so maybe the head unit actually came from a Romanian A2 from ebay.de. I won't bother to try to de code that scenario.

If the original iPod works then the cable works, the jail-broken iPhone is the problem.
