what size is the socket to unscrew the oil filter cap in a 05 A8 4.2?

This depends on if you have an MPI BFM Engine (24mm) or an FSI BVJ Engine (32mm).

So I have elsawin downloaded and everything, but when I do a search inquiry for my car, it always pops up with a “action canceled” page no matter what I try

Don't know what version of ELSAWin you got or how it's installed. I can say ELSAWin is one of the most complicated and finicky installs. That said, using resources on this and other boards, I did get version 5.2 running on Windows 10. Still, it gets broken by Windows Update frequently. Really, the best way to run it, is to get a version preinstalled on a VM and spin it up. Like this:
