I was doing my 105K service..(someone could have warned me about the amount and velocity of the oil from the drain plug!!!), as I was pulling the spark plugs, I noticed oil in the plug well and on the upper threads of some of the plugs. Initially I thought it was coming from the combustion chamber..but none of the plugs had oil near the bottom. I'm thinking it may be coming from the valve cover gasket..Any thoughts?

If it's only in the "plug wells" closest to the oil filler hole, perhaps it spilled there when someone was filling or topping up the oil level between changes. I've had no valve cover gasket issues with 120K on my '04 w/4.2L V8. This would have to be wet oil though. Some of my removed plugs have oil on the threads. Maybe it is the anti-seize compound breaking down or it is oil in the cylinders due to rings or the old valve stem seals leaking . It's not VW/Audi ever had that problem before {eyes rolling as I had a '78 Rabbit}.
