Problem with 4.2 FSI engines ?
In a recent conversation with an Audi tech he mentioned that he heard that some 4.2 engines with timing chains used in A6s and A8s have developed oiling starvation in the variable valve apparatus that necessitates an R&R of the engine and transmission, then separating them to gain access to the afflicted parts for repair. VERY expensive.
Has anyone heard of this becoming an issue (like the problems that so many 3.0 engines developed in the C5 A6s when Audis less than rigorous recommended oil change schedules were followed)or is it an Audi techs'version of an urban myth ?

Well it is true. I just did that to my 2005 A6 4.2. It was chattering upon cold start up and then misfiring. In the Audi's TSB's they say that it is normal for the oil pressure to be low and for it to chatter.(thats crazy) It can not be that its good for any of the components. It will just damage them. Here are some pics of my rebuild. I change my oil every 5000kms

The A6 had the FSi engine before the A8.
Over here the FSi engines started appearing in about 2001 in the A4 then slightly later in the A3. Some VW's had it first I think, possibly the 1.4 golf in very late 2000. The technology has been around for over 10 years now.
The major change the US was delayed because of the fuel quality and it looks like the C5 A6 was the first to be sold there with FSi engines.
