PROBLEM with lunging....bouncing tach ???
I recall seeing a post in here a while back but can't find it for the life of me.
This has been going on for some time now but dealer says they can't replicate (SHOCKED) while coasting at about 40MPH I can feel the car lunging and the tach. is bouncing up and down a few hundred RPMs.
I also just had it in for a tranny leak which was the cooler leaking and now since getting it back the car seems to be doing the same thing while cruising at about 35 MPH with light / constant pressure on the gas.
Also likely not related the car up-shifts way too soon and some instances and leaves the car lugging....then has to re-downshift in order to get up to speed.
Any thoughts ?

Groan...I'm surprised if it's this...
But we D2 owners have a common problem called "hunting" with the transmission. Type that in on the D2 forum and you'll have enough info to last you for weeks! I find it hard to believe it's that since the D3's have throttle by wire which is supposed to solve the problem. But the symptoms seem awfully familiar. If anything, your valve body could be going.

It's the torque converter not being able to regulate properly
In the D2, it's the valve body that gets worn. rioblanco has it right....
Dude, that's crazy.....it will drive you to get rid of the car. Trust me, it's the valve body.

Year and mileage of your car? We had better start tracking this
to see if it is a unique issue with your car or something more widespread if it is indeed the dreaded *hunting*.
The last 5 digits of your VIN would be helpful also to determine "early" or "late" model year status as Audi has made a lot of mid-year production tweaks on our cars.
Thanks and good luck. Guys like Paul and Tozo over on the D2 board are our resident experts on A8 trannys (and dang near everything else).

I've been tracking all the info from my petition. If you want, email the info to me and I'll add you
to the petition
The more people we have complain, the better the chance we have at a resolution. Still far away though. Audi doesn't like admitting things

For reference my problems and how they were sorted
My car started doing this, mainly when cold.
I got my car serviced with a full fluid change (twice) one to flush it through, and one to replace with. A note this is NOT the blue fluid as this isn't compatible with all transmissions.
This made a massive difference but it still wasn't perfect. I occasionally used to get a ESP light on constantly once every few months which cleared itself. Turned out to be a faulty brake pedal switch. I then replaced with one that caused more errors as I was given the wrong one. A revised part arrived from Audi and I fitted it. Amazing how much difference this made!! The car is perfect to drive.
For a cheap fix, it is worth a go and 10 minutes fitting it yourself.
1) Remove trim strip above the lower panel
2) Remove fuse cover and undo 2 x Torx screws
3) Remove 2 x Torx on top cover
4) Remove 1 x Torx on lower cover
5) Remove side strip near door
6) Remove lower panel
7) Remove air ducting above brake pedal
8) Twist pedal switch to remove
9) Install new pedal switch ensuring it clicks.
As usual installation is the same as removal.
Hope that helps.

I am trying to put together as much info......
as I can before I waste more time at the dealership so they can call me and tell me they can't find anything wrong with it.
The car is 2004 and has 77k right now. I dont have the VIN handy but I can grab that soon.
The car drives fine but I can tell something is just not right. Aside from the lunging the car seems to upshift and downshift or maybe the better term is "hunting" for the right gear. This all happens only during "easy" driving. If I step on the gas moderatly the car seems to function fine which is why the dealer is going to tell me to go scratch.
SO three possible things so far....
1. brake switch
2. T. Coverter
3. Valve Body
Can anyone shed maybe a brighter light on what they feel could be the ultimate culprit ?
