Replacing left hand catalyst without removing engine?
Is it possible? Apparently one bolt that can't be reached without taking the engine out, but some people have done it..
Any one any ideas?
Thanks

Re: Replacing left hand catalyst without removing engine?
IIRC, a couple of the Oxygen Sensor replacement procedures begin with:
1. Remove engine.
I sure as heck would try vise grips, universals on 1/4" drive extesions, Hole saw bore through the floor (remove carpet 1st) etc. before removing the engine!

Dropping the subframe out only lowered it a few mill as all the hoses & looms connected etc...
Bulkhead is the problem as has been said not prepared to cut through it just yet! They tried removing the wheel well but could not get to it either.
So, they are going to try again next week; ran out of time today and I'm off on holiday tomorrow so I need the car back!
What's the impact of driving with a knacked catalyst?

I have about 3000 miles to do in a couple of weeks... silly idea?

This string is giving me nightmares--W12's are blessed with even more of these lovelies...
and no doubt at least some are in the remove engine category.

I'll raise you four...
for a total of 8 O2 sensors in the W12. I think I remember this remove engine scenario for the C5 RS6 too.
Not sure about the hole saw, but like you would definitely try all the possible assortment of vise grips, specialty socket and other wrenches, Rube Goldberg and other ad hoc tools, after first looking at all the specialty tools from Lisle, Zelenda and the other places for any "why didn't I think of that" inventions to save the day.
When I did O2's on my C5 4.2 I found it was an absolutely blind reach of the passenger side, accomplished only by first removing the oil filter to buy a little more room, then stripping the air box and pre-manifold intake ducting from above, and then crouching on top of the motor with the right wrench (a crescent as I recall in the end) to get just the right angle on it. Needless to say, Bentley didn't mention the "crouch on engine" step either, instead probably saying remove a ton of stuff. I recognize the D3 is probably worse though because the 2004 emission tightening led to moving the catalysts much closer to the engine for early light off (and often using two in line). As a trivia matter that was why all RS6's were imported as 2003's only.
