Default Rotor Screw

I started disassembly of the front brakes earlier for caliper painting, and ended up rounding out the screw that holds the rotor in place. Next step is to drill it out unfortunately, but I just wanted to get a second opinion that everything should stay in place with the wheel/lug nuts. Every other car I've done brakes on hasn't had one of these screws, but I hate surprises.

The screw is not entirely necessary, it simply aids in holding the rotor in place and assures alignment of the lug holes. Mine were corroded in place and had to drill them out too. I did not bother tapping them out and heli-coiling them and there have been zero braking problems without them. They have no mechanical function otherwise

+1, an aid to mounting the wheel on. Not needed if you have that procedure down.

Awesome, thanks for the reassurance! Ended up having to drill out both of them. After seeing how these doubled the amount of time my project was supposed to take, I don't think I'll be grabbing new ones after all.

Maine, that screw is a convenience thing - - and they tend to be VERY soft. I've done a couple sets of rotors/pads in the past 2 months. Some of the rotors had a fresh screw included, which is nice.

None of my VW's or Audi's have them anymore. All of them seizes and snapped off or I drilled them out. No issue whatsoever.

Rear brakes needed to be changed/painted today, and I was blessed enough to have the chance to drill out those screws as well! Again turning a 2-hour job into a 4-hour job. That, and the getting to one of the caliper bracket bolts was a PITA.
