S8 or W12?
I am thinking of adding to another D3 to the garage. If you had a choice between a 2006 S8 (V-10) and a 2006 W12 which one would you get and why?
Maybe I should get a newer one like a 2010?
Thoughts? Comments?

S8's were not available in 2006 or 2010 model years.
I'd go for a 2008-09 S8 as these years received the face lift and other improvements. But I'm also bias towards the S8.
Either would be great to have in the garage, though.
Good luck.

There is no 2010 W12 or S8. Production stopped in Spring 2009.
When I consider this, I start with LWB vs. SWB and endless torque vs. sporty high HP and revs. Given the various posts over time, I would probably not get an early build S8 if I had the budget. 2007s were fresh on the market, while W12s had a longer build history. On any D3, as already noted you come to the pre- vs. post facelift (2008) question too. Since the economy tanked in 2008 and they way overbuilt 2007 S8s to boot--both of which led to a long delay releasing 2008's in the US back in the day--there is a bigger general supply of earlier vs. later ones.

For me it was sport vs luxury. I wanted the best of both worlds. A big torquey 12 cylinder with the best D3 interior with a powerful motor that I don't have wind up to get the power down.

Personally, I would prefer the W12. The mountains of torque would be more suitable to my driving style, and on a day to day basis the more subdued nature of the car is more appealing to me.

The S8 has over 90% of it's 398lbft available as low as 2300rpm. And the W12 has 428 with 95% available at 2300 as well. Not that much between them when weight is taken into account really.
If I were buying again, I would have a hard time between the pre face lift S8 and a W12. I prefer having less sound deadening so I can hear the V10 a little better and the funky folding mirrors on the pre facelift. The S8 is more tossable since it's lighter and shorter(as far as big fat sedans go, they all handle like crap really. You don't buy these cars to corner carve).
I love the W12 because of the features available to it that you can't get on the S8. Cooled and massaging seats, fridge, 4 seat config, softer ride, rear space, etc.

I have to agree with TSHong, I started looking for a S8 but found a better value in the W12 for similar money but with several additional features/options and comparable performance! Can't beat the LWB W12.........mj

The extra legroom in the LWB versions is worth a lot to me. A few more 'creature comforts' as well, as already noted.
The S8 has a nicer looking front end, however.
