Now, before you call me a dumb ****, the gas gauge did not read close to empty, and the low fuel light was not on. I posted a couple of months ago that when I filled up, the gauge did not read as full. I marked that off as it being really cold. Guess there must be something else going on.
But I'm out for under $500. WooHoo!

Well, my comment rang true..
The "Hopefully, whatever the issue is; it's not as bad as you think." one.
Congrats!
You may want to do what I do and reset the trip odometer with each fill up. You will quickly learn the typical range of a full tank on your car. As you approach it, refill and reset.

Hmmm, sounds familiar....
Back in 2000, the A6's (at least) got recalled due to fuel sensors that would get contaminated and give false positive readings. I wonder...
Best thing is to know how many miles you can generally go on a full tank.

BTW, it just happened again. Decided to go fill up. Trip computer said I had
80 miles to go, fuel gauge read above the red, about 1/4 tank, but it was bone dry. Car died about a couple hundred yards from the gas station, and I limped in. Took 22.926 gallons. It's a 23 gallon tank IIRC. Seems to run fine now. Cheap **** dealer apparently didn't put a whole lot in.

So don't trust the 'miles to go' from a partial filling.
You'll need to know how many miles you get from a FULL tank. I know I usually get 300+ miles around town and will put 18-19 gallons in. For pure highway driving, I can go 450+ miles.
So always zero the trip meter at fillup, and use that to prevent a re-occurance.
I still think you fuel sensors are fubar.

Similar episode occurred last year, but I didn't run out of gas, but noticed...
the fuel gauge didn't go all the way to right after a fill up and wouldn't go down below like 1/3 of a tank. As I recall it was a bad fuel sending unit. I think there are like 4 sending units in the tank and they are known to fail intermittantly.

Try a bottle of Techron added to your gas for your next 2 tanks.
It has been known to fix this problem on Audis and also on C5 Corvettes.
Get the "big" SUV size bottle that can treat up to 20 gallons.
