I did it by hand and it took about 90 minutes on my lathe from start to finish.
going slowly of course and keeping to .001" tolerances.
Not something I would reproduce in quantity without a CNC lathe (which I don't have).
A 12" stick of aluminum is about 7 dollars.

Audi is using the plastic pipe.
Based on the rate of failures, its getting pretty common. When those O rings are sold in sets of 3, that is an indicator that the oil cooler has failed in some way.

The metal pipe is a excellent idea!
I had this plastic pipe replaced recently in my 2001 S8 - took ages to diagnose where the coolant leak was. Thanks to reading PaulW's site I told my mechanic to check this pipe and sure enough it was leaking.
Audi wont sell the pipe on its own, you got to buy the whole oil cooler block as well!
