These things break all the time, in some way or form. I've had to replace both assemblies because of the same cracking, but now what I've got going on is an electrical "gremlin" that allows the rear passenger far-side tail light to illuminate sometimes, othertimes not. It's not the bulb. Not to mention that but for God knows whatever reason (VCDS website will confirm this) the starter will refuse to work from time to time needing a reset or a cool-down period before I can try to start it again and it is, no joke, caused by quote "a faulty Brake Light Switch can cause this".

I blame the crack leading to possible corrosion due to much humidity getting into the guts of the rear electric there.

Anyway, I believe a new single light assembly in good condition will run you ~$200 (maybe $150?) from a salvage yard and/or eBay. Also don't forget the vendor / user sales section here.
Regards,
Naudi

Let's not make the same mistake twice here. Don't tint these
