Default Those dang rear brakes!

Hello all.Have 2008 A8 L. Just wondering I've read quite a few testimonials how people have successfully activated and released EPB , using a 12v power supply and gator jumpers. Now that sounds very doable and not too technical. Question is?? I was under the impression you have to re- calibrate the pad thickness?? On some software?? Question is will/ or can/ does?? The vehicle learn the air gap autonomously somehow. I've read you can activate\reactivate the parking brake few times to fix air gap?? VERY BIG THANKS FOR READING AND ALL INFORMATION!! IM STILL GREEN ON AUDI PROCEDURES.

Doesn't some parameter for rear pad thickness need to be entered on the A8?

The reason for entering the thickness is for brake wear indicator to come on but it doesn't work anyhow, mine was almost to the metal and nothing came on. I don't think the system really has a precise measurement way to do it correctly. Just check the pad thickness whenever you rotate the tires is efficient. Same with battery, never coded either and it works fine.
Cheers,
Louis

Yea I just changed out the original battery with a non VW and never coded it in and it works out great! So it will function properly and safely without the programming of the pad thickness?? You guys are AWESOME on this forum. VERY HELPFUL!!! Big THANKS!!!

You open the eBrake prior to working on the rear brakes using VCDS. After doing the brake job, you then close the eBrake, function test them and then code the pad thickness. The way the pad thickness monitoring works on the rear is by using the coded thickness and counting how many turns the eBrake needs to close measured by its internal hall sensor. If you do not code the pad thickness, than it will use the current (low) setting and you will get a pad thickness thin warning. I know nothing of any other method for doing this and even if you use VCDS, if you don't do it right, you can damage the eBrakes and/or calipers.

You will want to do this the right way. Calipers are expensive and the brake warning light is annoying. I've never known anyone to get that light to go off after it's been activated any other way.

Default Good Thread!

I have to do this also. Good information here. Since I have VCDS, it looks pretty easy.

I'll have to measure the pads before installation and write it down for coding.
