Trunk Opening Problem - Not the latch problem`
Occasionally but not always my trunk will fail to open via power assist. This usually occurs when it is cold. I have replaced both struts but the problem persists. Any direction on what/where o look next or test would be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Glenn

As I understand the problem, when it's cold, the battery voltage is low, 11.9-12.1v, it doesn't supply the voltage and current to drive the initial torque to lift the lid to pass the momentum threshold, hence it would try to lift and the flex of the trunk on driver side prevent it from lifting.
I put a strong enough spring as anchor to support the driver side and it would lift. If it's been working when it's warm, then I would check the battery and lube the hinges. The struts replacement has been a waste of money always.
Cheers,
Louis

Classic symptoms...
There are MANY threads/posts on the problem. You undoubtedly have a 2004-2007 A8. In 2008 they upgraded the motor to one with more torque , and the design flaw was solved. Look at your trunk lid motor, if the motor housing is black, then you have the early spec motor,,,go to car-part.com and buy a used 2008-2010 trunk motor. Very straight forward R&R.
