Upgrading from a D2 to D3....advice?
Hello All. Currently have an '01 A8L, silver/black, 117k miles, cam belt and water pump done at 105k, very nice condition - only flaws are road rash on front bumper, tiny dent in front hood, and central locking vacuum pump bad so locks must work manually. Great car the runs flawlessly and has never let me down in the 3 years I've owned it. I have added new 18" RS-4 wheels with Conti tires and they really enhance the look of the car. Trade-In value for this car is pretty low according to on-line sources, $8.5k to maybe $10.5k.
I do all of my own work, so I'm not too worried about something mechanical, but complexity of the electronics of the D3 do worry me a bit.
My problem is that there aren't any Audis around where I live. So I must drive an hour or more just to see one or two. So I scan ebay and auto-trader and other sources.
Test drove an '04 A8L yesterday with 68k miles, dark blue/tan. It drove very nicely and I was impressed with the "quietness" of the car. The bad thing was that the paint and exterior was trashed - it just looked aweful! I couldn't believe how bad it was for such an expensive car. The previous owner obviously did not care about the car. So even though I had no intention of making an offer, I at least got a good test drive in.
I have been studying up and reading all of the concerns about the D3 cars. But I'm hoping that after all this time, that the "bad" cars have been fixed by now. I'm still going to avoid looking at a low vin number car just in case.
As for prices, I'm seeing what seems to be - from pictures and descriptions - fairly clean '04s with miles from 48k to 72k around $21,000 to maybe $25,000. I am a detail freak and like to keep my cars spotless as much as possible. So the car I'm looking for must have very good cosmetics. My choice of colors are silvers, grays, blues, or black. Black is awesome looking but a total pain to keep nice. Silver is nice but doesn't have much impact. I have seen something called "akoya" silver? Looks very classy.
I have used the search function and read through many old posting about these cars. Never the less...I am interested in what current owners have to say. Any and all opinions or criticisms welcome. Thank You.

Re: Black is wicked cool - I have a couple of questions....
Did you "de-badge" your car, I don't see anything on the rear? Also, are those 18" or 19" wheels? Your car really looks terrific but even if you were to sell I'm sure that car is out of my price range...just way too nice!

Not set in stone yet, but Randy went and test drove
a diesel Jetta last week and was really impressed with it. He's wanting a more fuel efficient commute car. So... during the week when he's driving the VW, I would have the RS6 at my disposal. I haven't had a speeding ticket for 25 years... hopefully, this wont ruin my clean record =)
