User Interface Design - GM tops?
Just returned from a business trip to LA and had a new Cadillac STS as a rental through Hertz.
While the driving experience of the STS left little to be desired, I was blown away by the intuitive design of the touch screen interface to custom the car's systems. I was able to get the hang of it very easily and it was a mixture of touch screen buttons along with buttons in center console that allowed easy and quick navigation between functions.
Plus it had one very neat feature: the screen can be tilted to 3 different positions to eliminate glare for drivers of different height. Now that's a bright idea!
Now, why can't the Germans make an MMI/iDrive/Comand system as intuitive as this? Mind you, the MMI in our cars are the best of the breen among the central controller user interface designs. But there's always room for improvements!

Even the nav in my Envoy Denali is very easy to use and mostly intuitive.
I love the touch screen functions and the ability to see a wide area around the car from a "3-D" perspective. The most irritating feature, though, is that you can't program it on-the-fly. The car has to be stopped for a destination to be researched and programmed. That's just stupid!

No way!
You got to be kidding. I hate my '06 Corvette nav compared to the Audi Nav and MMI.
- low res graphics compared to Audi
- few street names are shown
- can't program once wheels are moving
- no integration with OnStar
- limited directory for stored addresses
- touch screen takes the eyes off the road to zoom in and out of map compared to reaching for the MMI control
A8 MMI integrated MMI design wins hands down over parts bin GM integration.
