Just got to jump in and do it. My first time was a front discs on my civic. The car also popped a code and needed a new o2 sensor and spark plugs. The plugs and sensor were anywhere from $500 - $800 from the dealer/firestone. I said F THAT and bought a set of craftsman tools and called up a buddy for moral support. He walked me through the brake job and I did the plugs and sensor on my own. Talk about a feeling of accomplishment!

I returned the favor and when I did all 4 brakes on the MDX I had a buddy come over for moral support who wanted to learn basic wrenching. He helped me out and left knowing how to do the job on his own.

Default Hot Damn...

… that can be so intimidating - great job. I was so lucky to come of age when working on a car was so much simpler. For my trucks in the 1970's, you could almost stand next to the engine in the bay there was so much room… what IS EASIER today - is the access to information. Sites like ours gives us a collective IQ above any one individual.

Bravo

I would agree if you are talking about knowledge. As of group IQ, it is usually equal to the lowest IQ in the group.

That is a painfully true statement. As a Navy guy, everything is a group project and they get some really, um, special, people through the pipeline.

Default OK, OK, I meant knowledge….

…. tough crew here ;-)

Beautiful dash through the Santa Monica Mountains this morning at dawn… the canyons were deserted and the RS5 was thundering through the narrows… blissful. Crappy cell phone image below - but beautiful.

Happy Holidays

Eric

Default Jet fans........

Hello MP,

Hope all is well !

Yes I have the jet fans and light show on dash just like 2+ years ago, the gauge starts to rise, and then falls below "C", and just like before if I clear the code then the gauge goes right to 12:00, it is odd that clearing the fault will render the sensor working again just like it did 2+ years ago, I forget how many times I reset it back then until I finally did the job, I have heat, and it's nice and hot, BUT after reading your post again, I now just remembered that the other night there were no jet fans and the gauge only went to around 11:00 after driving say 35 city ish miles, it was 35* out, I don't have the real code right now as I was just using my smartphone with a dongle and torque app to clear it so I could have normal operation while driving...

I think you may be correct, or it is a combo of both, as sometimes it has the lightshow and jets, and sometime as you describe.

I will do a proper scan today to get actual code, I guess I should do the plugs again while in there..

Thank you again for your thoughts .

Hi BTW...

On your sensor, are you sure it's that? Do you have codes pointing to it? I ask because... I replaced mine, going into last winter. As it failed, the fans went to jet engine mode and I got the big red instrument warning display. All good on repair. The usual trick of pull intake and (barely) reach back there. A few hours, a little Bactine and $30 in parts.

Fast forward. Noticed one day recently my temp gauge went to zero and was just sitting there. #$%@, another temp sender... But wait... Runs normally, heats fine, no jet fan and no light show. I VCDS'ed it after the first time I saw gauge at zero; gave a code saying coolant system malfunction. Cleared code and gauge instantly went back to normal. That by itself was a clue to me it was maybe NOT the sender in absence of other prior companion symptoms. Did it a second time so I looked at code more carefully. Cleared it a final time with my suspicion in mind. With that, I watched temp gauge on very next drive while it was still working and saw it was slow to rise. Net, to me that slow to rise temp (along with the malfunction code) was the confirming symptom it is the thermostat. And yep, it only ran up to about ⅓ after even a good while, instead of the normal midpoint/half way. As in, a thermostat failing open with colder winter temps. Then after some more driving on freeway it headed to zero again; I expect it would again have the same code. It seems to do that with gauge shut down simply to give you a visual cue something is wrong, though no warning lights. Cross checked code against web, and also found others with the electronic thermostat, including many VW's. Net, very consistent that with the particular cooling malfunction code (which is otherwise vague), it ends up being the thermostat.

Net, review codes and think thermostat too if you don't have the dash light show, jet fans, etc. About $250 from discounted dealer and comes w/ gasket; plus the usual intake gasket. As we know, actually infinitely less work than a port 4.2 and a lot easier to get at than the barely reachable sensor.
