Water damage

Well, I was going to post a warning to remind people to be careful of water and check their drains, given the veritable typhoon we had in California today, but after some heavy rain and finding my car parked in a small river, my carpet was damp, but everything seemed fine on startup. Until a little later in the day where I heard a pop and the radio, MMI, and climate control all cut out. Time for me to call my insurance company and hope they don't total it. After all the work and money I've put into it, this would be a real shame to let go.

Shouldn't have started the car until you dried up everything :(

As evidenced by the photo, leaving it in place was unwise. It didn't seem like much water, no more than you would get from snowy boots, but it was apparently enough. Besides, I did manage to drive it a bit before it all went out.

Or, cancel the wasteful collision and comprehensive insurance and just keep liability insurance. Then pay for parts and fix yourself.

The car has already been so much work, I may fix this and be done with it. If insurance totals it, I'll buy it back and fix it this time but from there I am not sure.

Good luck, hope it works out. I love that color on a D3.

Yes, hope it works out okay too.

You might check and see if there is water back in the rear battery area. From the pic and the water toward the gutter and passenger side, I wondered about it. IIRC a heavy fuse that ultimately somehow ties into the MMI display and overall function lives back there--one of those bare metal ones held in by the small hex nuts.

Good call, I'll check in the morning. It was odd, I heard the pop, sound disappeared, but the display held on for a few more seconds until it disappeared.

Battery area was dry but after a few drives, everything came back, so I dumped a couple pounds of desiccant on the front passenger floors where it got wet. Maybe I got lucky, we will see!
