Weak Trunk Motor Can Be Fixed To Work Again....

I drew inspiration from this and concluded that the slight twisting of the trunk lid causes the hinge mechanisms to bind, hence the greater force needed to overcome the increased resistance.
Anyhow, my car has those little spring loaded plungers/bumpers on the edge of the trunk lid, so I figured I'd stow the right one and leave the left one out in order to provide a slight lifting force from the left side only to balance out the slight twist. Hey presto the trunk lid has worked ever since! The acid test will be to see how it holds up in the cold, but for the time being it works fine.

my solution
All I had to do to correct the same issue was adjust the bumper on the upper left corner of the trunk. If you watch the first video where the spring was attached, that rubber stopper is just a cap and the bolt below is adjustable. I simply removed the cap, unscrewed the bolt a couple counter clock wise turns and replaced the cap. Issue solved for me with adding or removing parts. Basically by adding a little more tension on the left joint allowed the motor to lift like new when trying to open. Hope this helps.

I'm so glad we're doing something to get our trunk to function again, regardless how silly the fix may be - as long as it works, it counts. I love brain storming session on problems of any significant value. This one is only $500. My daily session starts with 6 figures and up.

Isn't this why there are revised designed trunk hinges. There is a campaign to replace the hinges if you were within the warranty period. I just approached mine as a motor issue.

When they replaced the old one, can you check to see what size you have on the old one? 176Nm or 163Nm? Ask them if you can keep the old one.

Trunk lid closing problems as well

I have the same problem, but by adding tension to the trunk, makes it stop closing correctly in cold weather...
When I Close til trunk, you can hear the locking mechanism, but possibly because of to much tension, it stops, av the trunk is left in ulocked position, with warnig light activated...
Seems to me that replacing with the newer/stronger H model motor is the way to go...

Let me give you all some foord for thought....
So, my 2005 had the usual 'are you sure you want me to open my trunklid' syndrome, opened a bit, then shut, then locked. Tried loobing everything, better , but not cured.
So I ordered the 'metal motor' (new)from an Ebay seller. $325. Fair enough thinks me, that'll work.
Email from seller, only has old PLASTIC motor in stock but will let me have it (new) for $200. Do it, I say.
Motor arrives, fitted and yayy!! Trunk opens under power from the key fob and the door switch.
Sweet! Let me try that again. Whirrrrr, clonk, nothing. FFS. Here we go. Ebay case started, refund on the way. But what the hell? Why does this POS motor only work once?
The point of my story is this, you should see the end of my original motor that I took out:

Sorry it's a crappy picture (mobile phone) but look at how the end of the casing is pushed out.. doesn't look good. This may be common but I haven't noticed that condition mentioned elsewhere.
Lessons?
1) You can't always trust a Latvian Ebay seller.
2) Don't buy first model year cars. Manufacturers 'Do a Lotus' and have the customer finish of the development and testing.
New motor closes nice though, and is pretty quiet....
