2011 A8L MMI issues- Sound, Car Systems, Multimedia

A couple of days ago I was driving down the highway and the MMI went crazy. The first thing it said was “ Audio Unnavalaible” then Nav froze and then the Screen started closing and opening on its own.
The screen did not go dark or anything like that.
I checked the fuses for Amp, sound, and MMI and they were all in ok. Here is some pics of the current MMI status.

Thanks in advance for your help

Try three button reset per the MMI manual for the first attempt.

I forgot to mention that I did a reset. Nothing happens.

So, next step would be a VCDS scan for any codes/errors. Not generic OBDII to be clear, which won't reach into the Audi specific modules.

My only experience here was a hard drive crash in the 2013 Q5, which has essentially the same system as my S8. That resulted in an immediate loss of any screen display and all related functions. Yours is the earlier version though (pre Connect), so even that may not apply.

I was thinking it could be the hard drive because last night I was hearing a hissing sound from the multimedia.

I dont have vcds. i guess I have to visit the stealership.

Pray it isn't the hard drive... Forklift replace--the whole MMI unit for what at its core is a way obsolete ten+ year old low capacity drive. Thousands at dealer pricing for the MMI module if beyond warranty and then need to deal with MMI software, maps, etc. Our Q5 was warranty replace. Service guy said at time they had been seeing it with S5's some. I expect someone will come along with a repair service/swap type approach focused on the hard drive like with ABS modules, but I haven't heard of one so far.

FWIW, $199 for VCDS for three VIN's. Or probably about $199 for the dealer diagnostics... As in, pays for itself quickly.

May GOD be with me then. I am heading to trade it in if its the hard drive. The nearest stealership is 120 miles away. Do you think they could diagnose it at a VW dealership which is 25 miles away? I live in the middle of nowhere and the Indy shop I go to is very good with german cars cus he worked at MB for 20 some years and he knows his stuff but he said he will not touch my A8.

All german cars are expensive to maintain.

Yes, at least call VW and ask if they can accommodate. Their shop equipment should be able to run a full scan, which is what you need for starters.
