Good to see that Audi will get serious with D4 S8 power. Problem with the D3 S8 for me was that for all the extra money I only would have gotten another 100 bhp that was well under the S63, for example. if the D3 S8 had had even 500 bhp with decent torque, I might have gone for one. But lack of power coupled with relatively unattractive interior options turned me to the A8 sport. not at all sure that the extra money would have justified a bit lighter feel from the extra power.

Actually, the S8 is going to have two versions of Audi's DOHC 32V V8 (both of which will have to have 4.2L of displacement): supercharged gasoline, which will have to have a 7,500 RPM redline (and have to produce 572/580/434 SAE hp/DIN hp/kw from 6,300 to 7,200 RPM and 472/640 lbs/ft of torque/nm from 1,800 to 6,300 RPM) and twin turbocharged diesel, which will have to have a 6,000 RPM redline (and will have to produce 523/530/390 SAE hp/DIN hp/kw from 4,800 to 5,700 RPM and 590 lbs/ft of torque/800 nm from 1,200 to 4,800 RPM). The S8 will have to be 150 to 200 pounds lighter than the A8 and 300 to 400 pounds lighter than the A8L (the A8L is 150 to 200 pounds heavier than the A8).

The supercharged gasoline and twin turbocharged diesel versions of Audi's V8 in the A8 and A8L will have to be bumped down to 4L of displacement. The supercharged gasoline version of Audi's V8 in the A8 and A8L will have to have a 7,200 RPM redline (and have to produce 474/480/354 SAE hp/DIN hp/kw from 6,000 to 6,900 RPM and 420/570 lbs/ft of torque/nm from 2,400 to 6,000 RPM. The twin turbocharged diesel version of Audi's V8 in the A8 and A8L will have to have a 5,700 RPM redline (and have to produce 424/430/316 SAE hp/DIN hp/kw from 4,500 to 5,400 RPM and 538/730 lbs/ft of torque/nm from 1,800 to 4,500 RPM).

Eventually, the normally aspirated gasoline version of Audi's V8 in the A8/A8L (which will have to retain it's 4.2L of displacement) will have to have a 7,500 RPM redline (and will have to produce 375/380/280 SAE hp/DIN hp/kw @ 7,200 RPM and 332/450 lbs/ft of torque/nm from 3,500 to 5,500 RPM).

The reason as to why these versions of Audi's V8 in the A8/A8L/S8 will have to have the redlines, peak outputs and availability of peak outputs mentioned above? To stay competitive, keep sales up and meet market and buyer demands. For these reasons, the S8 will have to be 150 to 200 pounds lighter than A8 and 300 to 400 pounds lighter than the A8L. Plus, all cylinder counts higher than 8 will eventually be illegal (hence no V10 for the next S8 with the W12 eventually disappearing from the A8/A8L as well).

S8 (and W12) woud be terrific in this D4. BYW, Hint: as follow up to Bally's well presented case for future engines/models availabe in the U.S. - the cylinder diameter of the 6 is @12% larger than those in the 8. Watch for some incredible news within 24 months.
Also, as China is the first and (until now) only market for an A6L and soon to receive a terrific version of the 7, the new 9 is slated for Asian market entry and will be prototype modified after one year of sales there - keep in mind that all technology in a vehicle sold today was designed/sourced 3-4 years ago - Audi wants to step over that process and beat MB/BMW on that score 3 years ahead w/ the 9. I will continue to enjoy the D4 A8 but looking forward to driving that 9.

March 2010 Car & Driver article on S8:
http://www.caranddriver.com/news/car..._audi_s8-spied
Now almost a year old so maybe there is more current information, but the article makes sense. It also mentions the 4.0 liter single turbo 400 bhp engine for the 2012 A8. FWIW, the Audi sales people I spoke with about my decision to wait for the 2012 A8 did not disagree that it would have more power. it will be interesting to see how much more the 2010 S8 will be than an A8. Since I am not into stoplight racing, the 400 bhp A8 may do nicely. Confirming my impression of a test drive in an 08 S8 a few years ago, the V10 did not have a broad torque range. Sounds wonderful, but just not enough grunt. The torque on the 4.0 twin turbo engine will be much higher, although he bhp will be the same 450.
