2016 vs 2015 S8

Hey guys- have been following these threads for a while but first time posting. I’ve been in the market for a S8 for a couple of months and can’t really find any major differences between the 2015 and 2016 (not 2016 plus.). Difference in price on the two I’m looking at is about $16k. Mileage is within $3k miles on both. 2016 is CPO and would be under warranty through 2/2021 and also has the B&O upgraded sound. 2015 factory warranty runs out in 7/2019.

My main question is, did Audi provide any “fixes” for 2016 that were common problems in previous years? I can’t find any evidence of that being true. It looks like the windshield leak, 1k/3k vibration, and the twin turbo failures have been issues in both the 2015 and 2016, right? I read that they re-designed something related to the intake for 2016, but couldn’t connect it to the problem it solved.

I also don’t care for the wheels on the 2015, so would replace them. Anyone know how much Audi or an indie would charge to install the new wheels? Figure I’m still coming out ahead of the game by changing out the wheels and making some slight mods that I want (black vinyl on chrome, grille, and smoke tint on tail lights.)

Thanks in advance!

If you can swing, get the 2016. Longer warranty and you won't have to replace the wheels. I don't believe there were any real changes between 2015 and 2016. And at least here, I don't think there have been any reports of turbo failures on 2016 models.

If you take warranty and the B&O into account, they are nearly the same price.
If you bought the '15 and purchased an after market extended warranty thru 02/2012 would cost between $8-$12,000. The stereo is a $6k option.
I'd get the '16 and have warranty directly through Audi. That being said, you'd have to be very careful regarding mods.

Thanks! I needed others to tell me what I wanted to hear.... i was trying to justify the cost based on the CPO warranty and the B&O.....the wife was saying to go with the 2015.

The only mods I’m talking about making is a black ops package to grille, chrome, and smoke tint on tail lights. Assuming that won’t be an issue with CPO... I never had any issues with that on my current A6.

Those are fine. Just stay away from anything that touches the ECU until warranty is over. They will check - they checked on my 2015 A8 this week when my turbos failed before applying the fix under warranty.

Since 2015 was the USA midlife facelift year, no changes of any consequence until the Plus was finally delivered at dealers around March 2016. Awkward time back then, since Plus was known by December 2015, and dealers were sort of stuck with 2016's they had ordered after the first wave of sales for new model year. When I bought mine, and my CPO 3200 mile 2015 was way less than anything 2016 on showroom floor, even though they were dealing. Order guide page below from the pre-Plus part of the 2016 run.

Net, I would buy either a used 2015 or 2016 primarily on price, miles, condition, overall warranty length (including CPO) and any options or colors you want. Definite step and choice from 2014 to 2015 where the facelift occurs, and then the Plus step for modified tune and a few more options. But not from 2015 to early 2016.

FWIW, as far as CPO my (positive) experience from the D3 W12 is it is basically equal to or better the best exclusionary aftermarket warranties. Once they confirmed coverage of the Nav and stereo components (as of a few years ago), it removed one of the few D4 relevant coverage questions. Be careful though if it is current CPO. People talk about 6 years, up to 100K in a lot of historical AW threads. They cut that back to 5 years a year or so back, but of course didn't talk it up. Mine pre dates the change, so does run up to six years. Getting the warranty end date as you were posting (assuming it doesn't go out of coverage by miles) is the easy way to assess.

Also have them confirm whether or not car has AudiCare for scheduled service coverage. It can transfer on a used one, but original purchaser had to buy/get it. Depending on how much is left, that can swing the $ another thousand or so. Service dep't can confirm it by entering VIN.
